The last scan reports the 'cranial mass' shows 'significant reduction
compared to the scan of July' (which had shown a reduction of a third),
and 'no evidence' of the 'interpulmonary metastasis'. My doctor is,
naturally, delighted, but not half as delighted as I!
Given that the chemo has worked so well, he is recommending me for a
short course of radiation, 5 days on, two days rest, 5 days on. The
earliest this would be arranged is for the week starting 28 October. I
have asked him to try to arrange it for then. This means that I *may* be
able to get in to work for the week of 21 October. This remains to be
seen. I want to come in, because I am getting a bit bored with my own
company.
I will probably post more later, but right now I am just bouncing with
happiness!
Time for a Pimms!
(feel free to pass this along to whoever is interested.)
Cheers,
Kim :-)

You mean I get to *choose* !
Well, given my general light hearted outlook on life and that there is

Thank you. I am doing my best. So far I seem to be best at proving to my

The problem typically occurs where someone is using an older version of Acrobat
than we are, or where
their browser plug-in is out of date.
The solution is
1. make sure you have Acrobat 4 or higher installed
2. Instead of opening the file in your browser, download it (right-click on the
file and save locally) on your
PC, then open it directly in Acrobat.
If these measures don't work, please contact me directly and we can look into the
problem in more
detail; however we have not had any other queries raised about this so I am
inclined to believe that
the problem may be at your end.

I have acrobat 4 installed and can see these OK , in Mozilla 1.0, IE 5
and Netscape 4.6.
The problem seems to be that the file size is 730 KB which
takes some time to download. I suspect there is a whole
lot of invisible junk in there which could be cleaned out
to make a smaller file.

I have an older version of the full Acrobat software, which I often use
to 'print' a web page to a disk file. With the caveat that some things
may have been tweaked, one of the problems is that bitmap images don't
get handled efficiently, at least not by all the methods available.
Printing to .pdf isn't always the best way to go about creating a file.
I can't recall off-hand if Corel Draw still includes features that can
convert a bitmap to a vector graphic, good for a lot of the graphics
used at layout features on web pages, but I'd expect a big improvement
in file size if vector graphics could replace bitmaps. Printing to
PostScript and converting that to a .pdf is an option I've seen
recommended.
And I really don't recommend using the absolute latest version of
Acrobat for distributing data via the web. It annoys users who maybe
can't easily upgrade, such as in a more-controlled business or
government environment.

Creating a PDF pretty well *is* printing to Postscript -- the PDF
standard is just a layer around a Postscript core.

I have, a time or two, come across weird .pdf files which have a hidden
graphic, as if a panel of background colour has been overlaid. On a
slow PC, I've seen a flash of image-A, before it vanishes, and image-B
is created.
While this may have changed since the version of Adobe PDFWriter that I
have, I've taken this from the readme files which came with mine.
-----8<---------
The Acrobat PDFWriter driver was carefully designed to conform to
Microsoft's Windows development standards. As a result, it should work
with software applications which conform to the Microsoft Windows
printing guidelines. However, due to the complex interaction between
software applications and printer drivers, some applications may have
problems in providing full feature support with "printer" drivers,
including the PDFWriter.
Like all GDI-based printer drivers, the PDFWriter "advertises" itself
to applications as a non-PostScript device. It expectsto receive a
GDI-based description of a document, from which the PDFWriter
translates the GDI information into a Portable Document Format (PDF)
file. Any application which relies on PostScript, or any document that
contains placed Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) artwork or images may
not get good results with the PDFWriter. In most cases, the
application sends the PDFWriter a low-resolution preview image of the
page or EPS graphic. In effect, your PDF file would look the same as
if it had been printed to a non-PostScript printer. In such cases, it
is recommended that you use the Acrobat Distiller to convert your
document into PDF. For more information on Acrobat Distiller, see the
appropriate section in the Acrobat Online Guides.

Here's a hint: Ghostscript comes with a tool called ps2pdf that takes
a postscript file and turns it into PDF. It doesn't do the brain-dead
encryption thing, but it gives good results for portability -- and
it's freeware. (I use it for taking the postscript output of my writing
toolchain and packaging it for my agent, who's in New York -- saves a
ton on posting dead trees.)
As an aside, ps2pdf's output adds maybe 5-10% to the size of the
postscript input file. And the html2ps filter I use tends to produce
postscript output -- formatted for printing manuscript style -- only
about 10% larger than the HTML text input file. (A 100,000 word novel
runs to about 620Kb as pure ASCII, 680Kb as basically marked-up HTML,
750Kb of postscript, and up to 800Kb of PDF. Compared to the 2+ Mb
it bloats to in Microsoft Word, and the vastly huger output files
that Acrobat and Word conspired to produce last time I tried them.)
