I *hate* stains in general but pooh stains take the biscuit so I'm fed up.

I'm exclusively breast feeding Rowan (that's exclusive of other types of
milk *not* people)

We've got TotsBots (calling Portia) and they've got a fleece sewn in but now
they're all covered in yellow stains. We wash on 60 degrees with non-bio
Ariel liquid (got massive stocks to be organised and now wish I hadn't). I
started off dry pailing and washing on the second day so I thought the dry
pailing was the problem. Moved onto the vinegar in water in the bucket and
washing most of pooh off before putting in bucket, then a Vanish presoaker
overnight in the sink, then a 60 wash and we're clean again. But blimey what
a lot of work!!! So someone said just bung them in the bucket without
washing pooh off, and 60 degree wash will be fine (no presoak) - and it's
*not* fine. They're all stainy again :-(

For those of you with lovely clean nappies *after* the wash, what's your
secret please? Is there a non-all-day recipe for clean nappies? Can anyone
see where I'm going wrong? Does Rowan have a secret stash of turmeric
somewhere in his cot?

TIA

Don't worry, I've got the answer, and I can't claim credit either - I posted
almost exactly the same question a few weeks ago.

Sunlight. It sounds unlikely, but you can put nappies with bright yellow
stains on them outside on the washing line, and the stains disappear as if
by magic. You don't even need to bother with the Vanish (it didn't work for
me either).

Of course, you rely on nice sunshiney days, but I've hung the TotsBots in
our lean-to (fair amount of daylight) and it's almost got rid of the stains
too. I think during the winter I might have to put up with off-colour
nappies, but at least come the summer they'll be nice and bright again.

Sorry, I just had to write a bit more...

I've tried all the washing palaver but now I'm just doing the following:
washing using Persil non-bio (it was on special offer) at 60deg. I dry-pail
and do one wash per day. I was using the Ultra liners until I realised
there's not much point when the poo is almost completely liquid, it's not
like you can lift out liquid and flush it away, so now the *ahem* waste just
soaks straight into the nappy. They usually come out of the machine with
some evidence of yellow on them. Once they've dried on the line, you can't
tell which ones were the poo-ey ones. I've also started using a small dash
of sensitive fabric conditioner, since drying on the line was making the
nappies stiff and scratchy, and irritating Nipper's bum. I know they're not
supposed to be fabric-conditioned, but hey.

Also wanted to say *lol* at the turmeric comment. It always seems such a
completely improbable colour, doesn't it?

At the risk of wibbling on and on about poo (apparently new parents can't
stop talking about it), how often does Rowan go? Alexander was going at
almost every nappy change, but now he has spaced out to about once every 3-4
days, which is fine - but when he goes, blimey. I almost needed therapy
after a middle of the night nappy change earlier this week... I heard the
noise like the bowels of hell opening, knew he needed a clean nappy - when I
lifted his bum to slip the clean nappy under, a jet of yellow korma sauce
shot out, all over the chest of drawers and my jumper! I had to wake DH up
for moral support. He did about another pint in the new nappy, and then it
all went quiet again.

The things we put up with!!

NO, NO, NO Darlin' The fabric conditioner will make them less absorbant
(and probably irritate nipper's bum!)
If you have a tumble drier put the nappies in there for around 10-20 mins
before putting on the line. If no tumble drier give them a good rub when
dry to soften them up. We live in a very hard water area and I'm sure my
nappies get a build up of scale in them so I've been thinking about adding
salt to my wash. Apparently, vinegar in the final rinse gets them softer.

I hang ds' nappies on the line to dry, the sun bleaches the stains out! Now
he's a bit older I prewash using napisan.

sunlight is the magic ingredient, and over 1 or 2 washes dissapear. I do

i've now known a number of mums who use a dash of conditioner once in a
while without any probs, so if it woorks for you cfine, but as nic says,
it does decrease absorbancy, and can in some cause a rash, so if either
happen, then stop using for a while. takes a number of washes to rinse
out.

my wife sister says this :

soak the nappies with stains in soap/detergent water, do not rinse, dry it
with the detergent on it, then wash again after dried in sun. Have not try
it yet, my twins are due in Nov.

Oh that sounds like too much faff!!

It's not the end of the world if they've got a bit of stain, they are
still 'clean' the sun will sort it eventually.
