I got Kyra weighed today and the HV started going on about centiles - I had
no idea what she was talking about? Can anyone explain in simple terms? :o)

Hi

In your red record book for Kyra there is a growth chart with lines ready
measured out for average, below average, above, etc.
those lines are the centile chart and centile lines (anybody correct me if I
am wrong as Im not an expert)

Do not worry about Kyra's growth , as long as you think there is normal
development.

My daughter Ella-Jai is 2 years old in October and she weighs only 19lbs,
and is below the 25th centile but she is a very bright and happy, healthy
girl, even though the HV referes Ella to the GP every now and then just to
double check things but GP always says she is fine.

Hope that is of some help!

James was 0.4 when born and is now about 25th for weight, 50 for height and
0.4 for head circumf.

I used to get all bothered about it but now it's just 'mothers' instinct'
that tells me he's just fine!

My health visitor told me that Kamron being 15 lbs and on the 91st centile
means that 9% of babies in a hundred weigh more than him, and 91% weigh less
than him.
So with Kyra 25% of babies weigh the same or less as her, and 75% weigh
more.

I hope I have made a bit of sense!

Try not to worry about them - just look for steady growth and development. I
got very hung up on David's weight when I was breastfeeding as he kept
dropping down the lines and his curve seemed to be levelling out He started
at the 25th, dropped to the 0.4th and since going on to formula and then
beginning weaning has climbed back to between 2nd and 9th with a nice steady
curve.

As long as Kyra is happy and you're satsifed with her growth and development
go with your instincts (like S said).

Others have already explained what a centile is.
What to look out for is whether a child quickly moves from "their"
centile to either one much much lower or much muh higher.
So, if Kyra suddenly moves up to 95% in a month you might want to look
into why. She'll probably settle on her centile, moving around a little
bit as she goes through growth spurts etc.

Thanks all for your replies :o) I'm not overly worried about her weight and
things - she's a very happy & healthy baby, and that's all that matters to
me - I was just interested in what centiles were because the HV started
babbling about them and I didn't have a clue what she was talking about lol.

Incidentally, Kyra was in the 25th centile when she was born, went up to the
50th at 3 weeks and now at 13 weeks is in the 25th again.
