I'm currently at 20 weeks and my regular winter coat is just starting
not to do up! This would be fine 90% of the time when I can just wrap
it around me as far as it will go and hold it there, but the
remaining 10% of the time is when I am cycling to and from work, and
in this cold weather it is NOT pleasant to have my coat flapping
merrily in the wind.

I don't *really* want to buy another coat just for these next couple
of months, but it looks like that is my only option... unless anyone
else has any better ideas? If that is my only choice, any
recommendations for places that sell coats in large sizes (I've never
seen a special "maternity coat", and I assume that such a thing would
be very expensive anyway) - my current coat is a UK size 18 so I
guess I'd need a size 22 or so to last me through the next couple of
months?

I've borrowed a size 22 coat (I'm usually an 18, occasionally a 20) and
it is doing the trick now, but then I'm quite a long way behind you.
TBH I'd suggest a larger size than 22, and borrowing one if you
possibly can, since they can be expensive (and a cheap one won't really
do the trick anyway).

Hi Vicky,

I am only 15 weeks and my coat isn't going to last me much longer either.
It's a uk 12, and I really don't want to buy another as I lose the weight
pretty fast after the birth.
I am going to buy a new one, it's getting so cold now as I walk outdoors a
lot.
It's funny even a bigger coat will prob ride up at the bottom! lol You have
to take care of yourself, so go on spoil yourself with a new coat!

Hiya

I'm cycling at the moment too, and my pertex still does up which is fine.
Could you not invest in one of these? They're normally about a tenner and are
windproof so keep you lovely and snug while on the bike. I can get a fleece
and a gillet under mine at the moment, although I won't be able to keep
getting the fleece done up for much longer!!

Ah, thanks for the advice Jac. TBH I don't really know anybody I'd be
able to borrow a coat from, so I'll maybe have a scout round the
charity shops to see if I can save myself a bit of money.

Hmm, not heard of Pertex before. I just looked at www.pertex.com but
it's not very enlightening - can you shed any more light? It sounds
promising...if it's something I can wear over my fleece, even if the
fleece isn't done up, that may well be sufficient.

Thanks!

It's the sort of thing you can find here:

http://www.evanscycles.co.uk/fast_frameset.html

put in Ron Hill Active Hi-Viz Jacket to see what I mean
or pop along to a local bike shop. Pertex is a brand name, but they are made
of all sorts of different materials. They're not very sexy, but there are
high visability, cheap and durable.

Don't care about sexy and hi-viz is definitely good. Thanks for the
pointer - I'll check them out in my local bike shop.
