Good grief, I remember this place, perhaps too well. Used to go there one
night a week, turning to two when the Thursday Night event moved from Barons
to the Zone. My main memories of that club are
1) Dance floor was FAR roo small.
2)Actually, the whole place was far too small.
3)The beer was Awful
4)Townies.
Actually, on the subject of the whole goth hangout thing, the only reason we
did was because there was no other club in the town that even remotely played
music that we liked. I mean, look at the choice after Summer 96, you had Quids
Inn (*shudder*), Ritzys (I think thats what it was called *Double Shudder*,
Central Park (the Less said he better) and a few others. Even Barons got crap
when they moved the rock night. It isnt a cool goth club, it's a club that
wasnt as awful as every other club in the city.
Nexus (who heard about the name change from a friend in Guildford, and hated
it immediatly)
Barons was much better though

Always was and always will be the only reason we bother with it,

You're telling me? Even though a couple of times I nearly had accidents

I ceased to do so after a while. I was on water most of the time after that.
I think my two main bad memories of the Zone are
1)When I had my long leather coat stolen from one of the benches near the
dance floor. I was very cheesed off about that one.
2) Every month or so, the shit would hit the fan and somebody'd have a major
argument with somebody else.
Of course, I dare not even mention the flooded bogs, as they usually were.
Swimming was a major survival skill there.
Even that first dance macabre that they had (I think it was in 1997, though I
can't be sure. whenm Distorshaus (sp.?) played there) wasn't overly amazing,
although it was surprising just how many people crawled out of the woodwork.
>Well Even Traveling to cardif gets expansive you know.
Don't I ever know it? I think I went to practically every Detonation from
October 1996 till July 1997. (i think the Oct 96 one was the first time that
a group got dragged from Swansea.) I always remember it was usually around a
fiver or thereavbouts for the Minibus, then however much to get in. And then
there was drinks, and the famous service station invasion on the way back,
where a whole bunch of strange people wandered into the Cardiff West Services
and demanded chips, sausgaes, bread and toast. We must have picked up
goddness-knows how many of their plates and taken them back with us, and we
(well, I) even got a bottle of Hot Pepper Sauce that I took a fancy to. it got
to the point where they expected to see us.
Nexus - Not so much first last and always as first, last and stuck
I lived in Swansea after the night in Barons got closed - the
inferiority of the Zone was a boringly familar story - that and o
f course tales about the Coachhouse.

I have never had anything nicked from there - Amazes me really!!
There are no benches near Dance floor any more not in the new revamped Rockit.
And they got rid of the cartoon comic character paintings and moved the
DJ booth (again)!! On the plus side there is comfy chairs now but
less of them
But the best thing is that the name of the club in Total is now The Rockit
21st century clubbing or words to that effect.
I have seen the 21st century and it looks GRIM!!

Why does this sound familar to me according to what I hear this has not
changed.

Oh no not the Zone toliets don't go there !!
Several people have gone in and never come out. And of course then there were
the obligatory Zone wrist slashing scenes in the toliets. Wow Aberystwyth is
seeming better by the minute as I write.

I was there then actually. Won a tape and t-shirt - whatever happened to
that band?? Didn't they play Detonation some time. (Didn't like them much
though
to punky for my taste - but they were a Welsh goth band and they are few and
far between.

The trip to Detonation was great - but they don't seem to be continuing
the tradition with Necroscope they are all slackers in Swansea nowadays. I
remember staggering back to Swansea at 4 am then I usually had to
walk home the things we do in search of good night out.

Yeah, The Coachhouse. With the dope room downstairs and it's tendency
to be full of weirdos (like us, actually)

Amazed me. I didn't have 50p for the cloakroom (cloakroom, now THAT'S
a laugh, a rail at the end of the room for coats, with a table that we
occasionally used to lurk on for hours (well, we did when Neil was on

Shame. Used to be quite fun sitting there watching people try and
dance on a dance floor that was so crowded that people couldnt move
(this was usually on a saturday night, where you could guarantee that
all the locals would be in there. Mutton dressed as Mutton was the
phrase I believe I used at the time.

Thank the powers that be for that one. They were one of the more
irritating things about the place. I've still got a couple of photos
of the place from my last night in Swansea, and the clearest thing
that came out was the pictures on the walls. Sheesh

Comfy chairs? Finally. They still got those tables in the other side?

You could guarantee it. Regular as clockwork, it'd happen. Someone'd
go off in a huff, then spend the rest of the evening in the toilets.

Better than running round after someone who took a load of
Antidepressants during a drinking binge. That was a friend of mine,
and we were running round after her, making sure that she hadnt taken
enough to do anything nasty.

Yeah, far too punky. I gather we actually got them mostly because
someone there knew someone in the band.
Incidently, I won a book. Not a bad book, as far as books went,
really. Still got it.

I didn't usually have to worry, because from the top road where the
coach used to drive along, i could just wander down through Brynmill,
to where I lived near the rugby ground. It's a shame that the Cardiff
trip is no more, it was always one of my favourite things. Whatever
happened to all the weirdos from there?

ROTFL!
Sorry, but I had the misfortune to be there last Saturday.
Although if that is the Zone, then I would be interested to hear a
suitable description of the other parts of town on a Saturday night. : )

Well they have gone through two colour schemes since that one. Can't remember
what it currently looks like - obviously dull.
I quite liked the comic characters it gave the Zone its air of pointless
desperation.
Oh they also have some TV screens - which wern't showing anything last time I
was there.

They got rid of the big tables and now have round coffee table type things.

Someone should release an anthology "Grim tales from the Zone" It could be a
particularly entertaining.

It was Uma I believe.

Those still in Cardiff are going to Necroscope the newish goth night which
Jeremey mentioned earlier in the thread. Detonation collapsed because of a DJ
shortage. Paul who helped run it is still around. The girl in the top hat who
will probabally remember (heafcliff) and various others whoses names I don't
know but recognise are still active.
Swansea is still the same really lets see who do I know who has been there for
ages you might know Bauhaus John, Steve, Una, Fran, Nigel, Morgan they are all
still about.
There is a big group of people going to Whitby in Nov.
Gwilym

Gawd. How revolting

there myself

I know most, if not all of those. They'll probably remember me
actually. I lost track of everything after BJ moved.

Interesting, Doctor
