There's a Hell of a lot there that I'd dance to. They /definitely/ need
a set of repeater speakers in the quieter areas so that people can tell
what's being played on the floor.

One-man gothic horror b-movie.
Well, if that's an accurate and typical representation of what Slime are
playing these days then I think people have been somewhat unfair in
slagging them off[1].
Certainly as far as variety, new bands and avoiding excessive cheese go
it's light years ahead of the Ballroom (if anyone could get hold of an
accurate Ballroom list, which I don't suppose they could, it'd make an
interesting comparison[2]).
I'd say that list is probably about as adventurous and interesting as
you're likely to get given the circumstances (rapid punter turnover etc
etc).
In fact, I'd guess it looks not unlike a (much longer) Dungeon playlist,
even down to the likes of Star Industry.
Might post it to the South Coast list so John & Andy can comment...

[1] Unless it's roughly the same list every week, which I'd guess is unlikely
given the presence of Star Industry etc.
[2] Yes, I know the ballroom isn't a goth club- I was thinking more in terms of
variety, cheese factor & number of new bands etc.

I've always found it ironic that a man whose theme song so to speak should
actually not like cars but have a thing for planes instead. He's also a very
dangerous pilot and I'm surprised he's not a dirt dart by now.

Certainly this sound a *Lot* better than what I remeber from last time I got
the feeling the must have played the whole of floodland twice over the
course of the evening

Many of those are played avery week, tho there's been a recent influx
of new stuff, which I definitely approve of. Pitty this occured after
I got sick of it all and stopped going quite so much.

OK, so who's going to crawl out of the woodwork & catch the Puressence
gig at the Falcon in London on Moday March 23?
[....and if they're so great how come they're playing the smallest pub

This must have been Livia (is that her name?) When she first appeared
in the Slime, she did a nice electro/darkwave set, but more recently
she seems to have been injected with the 80s bug, because all she ever
plays is chart hits of yesteryear.....and her selections do tend to be
a bit....similar...from week to week. I mean, 'I'm in Love With a
German Film Star' by the Passions is a fine song, but she had it in
such heavy rotation over recent weeks I began to think she was a
former member of the band, or something......
>Gosh! I didn't know anywhere still played JAMC!
I still play them very occasionally. The new single's dead good, BTW-
and they're playing Portsmouth on the 28th April (which is good, but
also a tad annoying as Marion were meant to be playing then).

See: any number of great but sadly neglected bands (most of the ones
I've liked over the years, oddly enough...)
Also, of course, they're fighting with a vaguely goff sound on indie
turf, as it were.
In this sort of case I think it's possibly slightly easier for UK goth
bands to get a small audience[3], owing to the existing scene and the
relative scarcity of UK goth bands, but then of course it becomes very
difficult to break beyond the confines of the scene and get to a wider
audience.
Things are possibly more difficult for indigo bands at the starting
stages as they don't fit with the indie sound or the goth scene, but
once beyond the starting stages they tend to do a lot better (there are
exceptions, like Garbage, but then Garbage had the slight advantage of
starting off with Butch Vig & co being in the band).

Pete Scathe (Next Resurgence: Sunday 5th April)
[1] Chris, who's in the band & promoting the gig, has come up with a novel way
of getting blokes to the gig. He's telling them that half of Portsmouth City
Girl's school will be there[2]. God knows what he's telling the women...
[2] Not the reason I'll be there, I hasten to add...
[3] After all, people will tend to go to a goth gig because it's a goth gig,
whereas for bands like Puressence they'll be there purely for the music.
>
>[....and if they're so great how come they're playing the smallest pub

Thanks - I'll put it next to the bugle I'm going to have later. Gave
up trombones last week, see.
I think if you tried blowing a baboon you might notice a difference. And,
maybe, end up with a happier baboon!.

>baboons? basoons? no real difference, huh?
Actually, Baboons are much more difficult to record compared to Bassoons.
Bassons have a set note range that can be played whilst Baboons grunt from
a low midrange to a piercing high f shriek. The main problem, besides an
unpredictable dynamic range, is that a mounted mic technique has to be used
due to their irradic movements. Quite snappy too, the buggers. I've lost 2
assistant engineers in the last session.

Actually Bassoons have a tentative connection with the contents of this
thread in that they are often called fags on music scores.
