The original badge was designed in 1942, it consisted of a laurel wreath
with four shields, containing the letters REME, it was surmounted by a
crown. Inside the wreath was a set of callipers.
King George VI approved the design - but reluctantly. After the war, a
competition was held to design a new badge, but a suitable one could not be
found.
Mr Stephen Gooden CBE RA(Royal Academy) produced a design which was
generally accepted. The official description of the badge is:
"Upon a lighting flash, a horse forcene gorged with a coronet of four fleur
de lys, a chain reflexed over its back and standing on a globe. Above a
crown upon a scroll bearing the letters REME."
The horse and chain are symbolic of power under control, the lighting flash,
of electrical engineering. The horse forms part of the crest of the
institution of Mechanical Engineers, together with the lightning flash, it
symbolises the close link between REME and civil institutions. The globe is
indicative of the impact of engineering on the world generally.
The colours of the REME Stable belt were inherited from the 'parent' Corps:
RAOC & RE both use(d) Blue & Red, RASC used Blue, White and Yellow.
REME use Blue, Red and Yellow.

Hope this helps

Blue for the sea they never crossed, red for the blood they never
lost, yellow for the streak running down their ... you can guess the
rest. ;-)
