A former navigator in Bomber Command, and Metropolitan Special
Constable, he later served as ADC to the Lieutenant Governor of
Jersey.
The peerage had been created in 1871 for General Sir William
Mansfield, Chief of the Staff during the Indian Mutiny, who served at
Lucknow, Cawnpore, &c.
The 5th Lord Sandhurst was born 4 September, 1920, as John Edward
Terence Mansfield, grandson of the the 3rd Lord Sandhurst,
(1857-1933), and a great nephew of the 1st & last Viscount Sandhurst
(who was also the 2nd Baron), (1855-1921), Governor of Bombay, and
later Lord Chamberlain to King George V, 1912-21, who married Lady
Victoria Alexandrina Spencer, daughter of the 4th Earl Spencer, KG.
Our subject's father, Ralph Sheldon Mansfield, the 4th peer, inherited
the family honours in 1933. He had married in 1917, Morley Victoria
Upcher, of a landed family.
The fifth Baron's sister, Valerie, married in 1938, the 8th Earl of
Macclesfield, of Shirburn Castle, Oxford.
Lord Sandhurst was educated at Harrow, and served in the RAFVR,
1939-46: Bomber Command (as Navigator & Bombing Leader): 149 Squadron,
1941.
With 419 (RCAF) Squadron, 1942; 12 Squadron 1943-45; awarded the DFC,
1944.
He was a Metropolitan Special Constable *C* Div. Sergeant, 1949-52;
Long Service Medal, 1955.
Hon. ADC to the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey, 1969-74.
He succeeded as fifth Baron on the death of his father, 28 October,
1964.
Lord Sandhurst married firstly, 7 Nov. 1942, (div. 1946), Priscilla
Ann, second daughter of J. Fielder Johnson.
He married secondly, 3 April, 1947, Janet Mary, elder daughter of John
Edward Lloyd, of New York, United States.
He leaves a widow, and two children, a son, Guy Rhys John, (b. 3
March, 1949), and a daughter, Victoria Elizabeth, (b. 1957).
The son, a QC and Recorder since 1993, now succeeds as sixth Baron. He
is married to Philippa St Clair Verdon-Roe, and has issue.
