Sir James Robbie Farquharson, KBE, died at Kirriemuir, Scotland, 17
February, 2005, aged 101.

He was born 1 November, 1903, son of Frank Farquharson, of Cortachy,
Angus, Scotland, by his wife Agnes Jane Robbie, and was educated at
the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, and Glasgow University (BSc
1923).

Career: Assistant Engineer, LMS Railway 1923-25; Assistant Engineer,
Kenya and Uganda Railway, 1925-33; Senior Assistant Engineer, Kenya and
Uganda Railway, 1933-37l; Assistant to the General Manager, Tanganyika
Railways, 1937-41; Chief Engineer, Tanganyika Railways, 1941-45;
General Manager, Tanganyika Railways, 1945-48; Deputy General Manager,
East African Railways, 1948-52; General Manager, Sudan Railways,
1952-57; General Manager, East African Railways and Harbours,
1957-61; Assistant Crown Agent and Engineer-in-Chief of Crown Agents
for Overseas Governments and Administrations, 1961-65; Chairman,
Millbank Technical Services Ordnance Ltd, 1973-75; Fellow, Scottish
Council for Development and Industry from 1986; &c.

James Farquharson was appointed OBE in 1944; CBE in 1948; and KBE in
1960.

He married in 1933, Agnes Binny (Nan) Graham, by whom he had two sons.
Lady Farquharson died in 1992.

The funeral Service is at Airlie Parish Church, Airlie, by Kirriemuir
on Tuesday, February 22nd at 1 p.m. Interment thereafter in Kirriemuir
Cemetery (South gate).
