Professor Sir Roland Smith, Kt, Director of the Bank of England,
1991-96; Chairman of Manchester United plc, 1991-March, 2002, died 20
November, 2003. He was 75.

Roland Smith was born 1 October, 1928, the son of Joshua Smith by his
wife Hannah, and was educated at the universities of Birmingham &
Manchester.

Career: Flying Officer, RAF 1953; Lecturer in Economics, University of
Liverpool, 1960; Director, University of Liverpool Business School,
1963; Professor of Marketing, 1966-88, Hon Visiting Professor from
1988, Chancellor from 1996, UMIST; non-executive Chairman, Senior
Engineering Ltd, 1973-92; Chairman, Temple Bar Investment Trust,
1980-99; Chairman House of Fraser, 1981-86; Chairman, Readicut
International, 1984-96; Chairman, Hepworth plc 1986-97; Chairman,
British Aerospace 1987-91; Chairman P & P plc 1988-97, &c.

Roland Smith was knighted in 1991.

He married in 1954, Joan Shaw. No children.
