My Mum worked with his brother during the 60s.

Bernard got a smack in the mouth live, on air, in a satire program called
That Was The Week That Was which was hosted by David Frost. It was from
someone Levin had insulted the previous week.

Wish we could have seen the British version of "That Was the Week that
Was" here in the states. It sounds grand.

It was great. Fresh, innovative, satire with some of the best performers of
the day.

Cast included (don't know how many of these will be familiar outside the UK)
Millicent Martin, Roy Kinnear, Willie Ruston, John Bird, Lance Percival
(with a weekly topical calypso). I think Peter Cook may have been involved
too - he was certainly involved in the whole satire movement at the time.

Bernard Levin did a weekly monologue attacking one of the establishment
figures of the time (which was what got him punched).

Producer on the show was Ned Sherrin.

Spitting Image
Drop the Dead Donkey

These are probably getting a bit long in the tooth or even off the air
but I hope their are replacements that are just as good.

It certainly was. There is absolutely nothing to compare showing these
days.

Not really. The guy who confronted him (didn't actually land the punch
due to Levin's deft footwork) was the co-producer of a play in the
West End called "Savagery and The Light", in which his wife was
appearing in the lead role. Levin wrote a theatre criticism piece
tearing into it ruthlessly, and there was no real "studio security" in
those days.

Ah.... the 60's. There was talent around then.

Drop the Dead Donkey has played in the USA, on Comedy Central. It was

didn't find one.

Spitting Image has been here in one form or another, off and on, since
the 1980s.

He is also listed as a producer of both the U.S. and UK versions of

That's right. Sorry, my memory of it hasn't aged well!

HIGNFY is still running in seasons (off at the moment for summer holidays).

SI and DTDD are both (plus reruns of old HIGNFYs) playing on satellite
channels in the uk now.

Yes, Peter Cook started the famous character E. L. Whisty AFAIK.
The prog was introduced by David Frost.
Another figure in it who is still very much with us was Kenneth Cope.
