Albert Frederick (Michael) Wilcox, CBE, QPM, who died 8 February,
2002, aged 92, was Chief Constable of Hertfordshire, 1947-69.

He was born 18 April, 1909, the son of Albert Clement Wilcox, of
Ashley Hill, Bristol. He was educated at Fairfield Grammar School,
Bristol, and joined Bristol City Police in 1929.

Wilcox's appointments & postings include: Hendon Police College,
1934., Metropolitan Police, 1934-43. Barrister-at-law, Grays Inn,
1941. He served in the Allied Military Government, Italy and Austria
(Lieutenant-Colonel), 1943-46, and was appointed Assistant Chief
Constable of Buckinghamshire in 1946.

Cropwood Fellowship, Institute of Criminology, Cambridge, 1969.
President, Association of Chief Police Officers, of England & Wales,
1966-67; Chairman of the Management Committee, Police Dependents'
Trust, 1967-69. Regional Police Commander (designate) 1962-69. Member,
Parole Board, 1970-73. Criminology Research Fellowship, Council of
Europe, 1974-76.

Mr Wilcox, of Harpenden, Hertfordshire, received the Queen's Police
Medal in 1957, and was appointed CBE a decade later.

He married in 1939, Ethel, daughter of E.H.W. Wilmott, of the Manor
House, Whitchurch, Bristol. The marriage produced three children,
Susan, Bridget and Stephen.
