Deputy Chairman, Inspec plc, 1994-98, died at his home, 3 July, 2003.
He was 77.

Charles Henderson Tidbury was born 26 January, 1926, the son of
Brigadier O.H. Tidbury, MC, & the former Beryl Pearce, & was educated
at Eton College.

Career: served KRRC, 1944-52, in Palestine, 1946-48 where he was
mentioned in despatches; Queen's Westminster TA, 1952-60; joined
Whitbread & Co. Ltd., 1952; a managing director, Whitbread, 1959;
Chief Executive, Whitbread, 1974; Deputy Chairman, Whitbread, 1977;
Director, 1984-88; Chairman of Brickwood Brewery Ltd, 1966-71;
Director of Whitbread Investment Co, plc, 1975-93; Director: Barclays
Bank, 1978-91; ICL Europe, 1985-93; Mercantile Group plc, 1985-91;
Nabisco Group, 1985-88; Vaux Group plc, 1985-91; Pearl Assurance,
1985-94; Gales Brewery, Horndean, 1989-96; Director, Centre for Policy
Studies, 1988-93; President, Institute of Brewing, 1976-78, Chairman,
1982-4; Vice-President of the Brewers' Society from 1985, &c.

Tidbury, of Wickham, Hampshire, was knighted in 1989, and appointed a
Deputy Lieutenant for Hampshire in the same year.

He was Chairman of the Mary Rose Development Trust, 1980-86; Chairman
of the William and Mary Tercentenary Trust, 1986-93; Hampshire
Enterprise Partnership (formerly Business Liaison Executive Board),
from 1993; Member of the Portsmouth and South East Hampshire Health
Commission, 1992-96; Trustee, National Maritime Museum, 1984-96;
Governor, National Heart & Chest Hospitals, 1988-90; Portsmouth
University (formerly Polytechnic) 1988-96; Chairman, Govs of
Portsmouth High School, 1992-96; Master, Brewers' Co., 1988-89; Hon LL
D, Portsmouth, 1997.

He married in 1950, Anne, daughter of Brigadier Hugh Edward Russell,
DSO, & his wife Anne (later Lady O'Connor, wife of General Sir Richard
O'Connor), by whom he had two sons and three daughters.
