The comedy scriptwriter and lyricist Myles Rudge wrote the words for
two of the 1960s most famous novelty songs, Right Said Fred and Hole
in the Ground, both of which were recorded by Bernard Cribbins and
produced by George Martin with music by Ted Dicks.
Both songs were 1962 chart hits, and few connoisseurs of witty lyrics
can fail to recall the open verse of Right Said Fred in which a group
of removal men vainly attempt to move an unnamed heavy object from a
house: "Right said Fred, Both of us together/ One on each end and
steady as we go,/ Tried to shift it, couldn't even lift it/ We was
getting nowhere/ And so we had a cuppa tea."
