Richard Madron Seligman, CBE, Conservative Member of the European
Parliament for West Sussex, 1979-94, died in hospital, 9 July, 2002,
aged 83.

He was born 10 November, 1918, fourth son of Dr Richard Seligman, and
the former Hilda Mary McDowell.

He was educated at Rokeby School, Wimbledon; Harrow; & Bailliol
College, Oxford, (BA Hons.).

At Oxford Seligman was a member of the University ski-team, 1938-9; &
was President of Oxford Union, 1940.

During the Second World War he served with the 6th Armoured Divisional
Signals, in North Africa and Italy, 1941-46, and was promoted Major in
1945.

He was Chairman, Incinerator Company, Eaton Socon, 1960-88;
Conservative MEP for Sussex West, 1979-94; Vice-President, European
Energy Foundation, 1982-94.

Mr Seligman was a director of ARV Holdings plc, Fluoride GB, 1966-83;
& St Regis International, 1983-85.

Seligman was Honorary Treasurer, Conservative Animal Welfare Group,
from 1996; & was Chairman, UK Br., Confederation Europeenne des
Anciens Combattants from 1989.

Seligman, who lived at Horsham, West Sussex, married in 1947, Nancy
Joan, daughter of Julian Marks, by whom he had three sons, Lincoln,
Roderick and Dominic, and one daughter, Olivia.

His elder brother is Sir Peter Seligman.

The funeral service takes place at St Mary's Church, The Causeway,
Horsham, Sussex, Wednesday 17 July, 2002, at 3 p.m.
