He was born Godfrey Peter Manley Glubb, son of Lieutenant-General Sir
John Glubb, KCB, CMG, DSO, OBE, MC (1897-1986), who as Glubb Pasha was
Commander of the Arab League for 20 years and one of the most
influential men in the Middle East.
His mother is/was Rosemary, daughter of Dr James Graham Forbes MD,
FRCP.
Descended from an old Cornish family, Faris's paternal grandfather was
Major-General Sir Frederic Manley Glubb, KCMG, CB, DSO (1857-1938), by
his wife Frances Letitia, daughter of B.W. Bagot, of Carranure, County
Roscommon.
He was born in Jerusalem and lived in Jordan until just before his
father was sacked in 1956. In his twenties he decided to settle in
Jordan with his family -he took the name Faris (meaning _Knight_) -a
nickname given him by King Abdullah (a great friend of his father).
In his 20s he compiled programmes in English on Arabic literature for
the Jordanian broadcasting station and worked with the Ministry of
Information.
Arabic was as much his mother tongue as English - his primary school
education was in Arabic and he read Arabic at the University of
London.
In his youth he embraced Islam and wore Arab headdress. A magazine
article three decades ago described his thus: "Slightly built with an
endearing shyness, he eagerly welcomes friends - most are Arabs he
grew up with - at his small house overlooking Amman and Ahalf, and is
never absent from Friday prayers at the nearby mosque. He has the
utmost respect for his father's work...At present he is translating 20
Jordanian poets into English, and doing a study of Arabic literature
from 8 b.c. to the present day."
Faris Glubb was the husband of Salwa, and father of Mubarek, Sarah and
Darina.
The burial took place in Amman on April 7.
