He was born 15 August, 1931, son of Brigadier Roger Crofton, CIE, MC,
by his wife the former Dorothy Hatchell, and was educated at Hilton
College, Natal, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he picked up a
degree in engineering.
Career: Cadet, Her Majesty's Overseas Civil Service, 1955; Assistant
District Commissioner, Nyasaland, 1956; Clerk to the Cabinet, 1966,
Principal Administration Officer, 1968, Malawi; Industrial Training
Adviser, Overseas Development Administration, London, 1974; Visiting
Consultant, United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, Vienna
1979; Consultant, Foreign Office Know How Fund for Central and Eastern
Europe and former Soviet Union, 1991.
Melville Crofton, of St Giles Hill, Winchester, succeeded his cousin
in the Baronetcy of Longford House, Sligo (created 1838) in January,
2002.
He married in 1955, Mary Brigid Riddle, by whom he had two sons and
one daughter.
The baronetcy now devolves upon his elder son, Julian Malby Crofton,
born 26 November, 1958.
