Jeremy Beadle, who has died aged 59, achieved the paradoxical double
distinction of being voted the second most hated man in Britain (after
Saddam Hussein) and of being the most avidly watched presenter on
television.

Beadle shot to fame in the early 1980s as one of the presenters of
LWT's Game for a Laugh, a show which revolved round a variety of
practical jokes, either in game format played out in the studio or,
more cruelly, as elaborate set-ups played on unsuspecting members of
the public, who would then be made aware of the prank by the
presenter, who would declare the victim "game for a laugh".
