Rear-Admiral Edward William Ellis, CBE, CBE, died 13 January, 2002,
aged 83.

He was born 6 September, 1918, the son of Harry L Ellis and Winifred
Ellis.

He joined the Royal Navy in 1940; War service afloat in HM Ships
Broadwater and Eclipse, and liaison duties in USS Wichita and US Navy
Destroyer Squadron; psc 1952; Staff of Flag Officer Flotillas,
Mediterranean, 1954-55; Secretary to the 4th Sea Lord, 1956-58;
Secretary to the Commander-in-Chief, South Atlantic and South America,
1959-60; HM Ships Bermuda & Belfast, 1960-62; Head of C-in-C
South-East Secretariat, 1963-65; Secretary to C-in-C Portsmouth and
Allied C-in-C Channel, 1965-66; Secretary to the Chief of the Naval
Staff & 1st Sea Lord, 1966-68; Cdre RN Barracks Portsmouth, 1968-71;
Adm. Pres., Royal Naval College Greenwich, 1972-74.

Ellis was promoted Commander, 1953; Captain, 1963; Rear-Admiral, 1972.

He served as Private Secretary to the Lord Mayor of London, 1974-82;
Freeman of the City of London, 1974; Liveryman Shipwrights' Co., 1980.

He was appointed CBE in 1968, and CB in 1974.

Ellis married in 1945, Dilys Little, by whom he had two sons, John and
Kit.

The funeral service takes place at All Saints Church, Minstead in the
New Forest, on Monday 21 January, 2002, at 1 p.m.

The Admiral was not a recipient of the CBE twice over. One was the CB.
