Dr Geoffrey George Pope, CB, aerospace technology consultant, died
suddenly 25 October, 2004. He was 70.

He was born 17 April, 1934, the son of Sir George Reginald Pope by his
wife Susie Hendy, and was educated at Epsom College, and Imperial
College London.

Career: junior technical assistant with Hawker Aircraft Ltd, 1952-53;
Student, Imperial College, 1953-58; Royal Aircraft Establishment:
Structures Department, 1958-73 (Head Research Division 1969-73);
Aerodynamics Department, 1973-77 (Head 1974-77); Group Head,
Aerodynamics Structures and Materials Departments, 1978-79; Deputy
Director (Weapons) 1979-81; Assistant Chief Scientific Adviser
(Projects), Ministry of Defence, 1981-82; Deputy Controller and Adviser
(Research and Technology), Ministry of Defence, 1982-84; Director, RAE,
1984-89; Deputy Chief Scientific Adviser, MoD, 1989-94; President,
RAeS, 1993-94; Pro Chancellor and Chair of the Council, University of
Exeter, from 1999; &c.

He was appointed CB in 1986; US Secretary of Defense Medal for
Outstanding Public Service, 1994; &c.

Mr Pope, of Thorverton, near Exeter, married firstly in 1961, Rosemary
Frances Harnden, by whom he had two sons. His first wife died in 1989,
and in 1991 he wed Helen Vernon Brewis.

The funeral service is to be held at Thorverton Parish Church (near
Exeter) on Thursday, 4 November, 2004, followed by a private cremation.
