Lady Spearman (1921-2004), widow of Sir Alexander Cadwallader Mainwaring Spearman, Kt (1901-1982)

Lady Spearman, who died at her home, 20 July, 2003, aged 83, was the
second wife and widow of Sir Alexander Spearman, Kt (1901-82),
Conservative MP for the Scarborough and Whitby division of the North
Riding of Yorkshire from 1941 to 1966, and scion of the Spearman
Baronets.

She was the former Diana Josephine Ward, born in 1921, the only child
of Sir [Albert] Lambert Ward, CVO, DSO, TD, 1st & last Baronet
(1879-1956), MP for the North West division of Hull, 1918-45, a Lord
Commissioner of the Treasury, 1931-35; Vice-Chamberlain of HM
Household, May-Dec, 1935; Comptroller of the Household, Dec 1935-May,
1937, & Treasurer of the Household, May-Oct, 1937, who was created a
Baronet in 1929, by his wife, the former Constance Tidmas, daughter of
John Burton Tidmas, DL, JP, of Normanton-upon-Soar, and Sutton
Bonnington, Nottinghamshire.

She married 27 April, 1951, as his second wife, the then Alexander
Cadwallader Mainwaring Spearman, a grandson of Sir Alexander Spearman,
1st Baronet, PC (1793-1874), sometime Assistant Secretary to the
Treasury; Controller-General, and Secretary to the Commissioners for
the Reduction of the National Debt.

Her husband, who was knighted in 1956, had been a Governor of the
London School of Economics, spoke frequently in the House of Comnmons
on financial and economic matters. In 1951-52 he was Parliamentary
Private Secretary to the President of the Board of Trade. He died 5
April, 1982, aged 81.

Lady Spearman leaves four sons, Lochain, John, Andrew (married to a
daughter of Baron King of Bridgwater, CH, PC), & James, and a
daughter, Zara.
