He was born at Inverness, 6 March, 1909, the son of Thomas Henderson
Scott, OBE, MICE, and the former Mary Agnes Dixon, of Selkirk; and was
educated at Queen's Royal College, Trinidad; Balliol College, Oxford,
(MA); & the London School of Economics.
Appointments: he entered the Indian Civil Service, 1932; Indian
Political Service, 1935; Assistant Director of Intelligence, Peshawar,
1941; Principal, Islamia College, Peshawar, 1943; Deputy Private
Secretary to the Viceroy of India, 1945-47.
He was Deputy Director of Personnel, John Lewis & Co., Ltd, 1948-50.
Appointed to Foreign Service, 1950; First Secretary, Foreign Office,
1950-51; British Legation, Helsinki, 1952; British Embassy, Beirut,
1954; Counsellor, 1956; Charge d'Affaires, 1956, 1957, 1958; idc 1959;
Consul-General, then Ambassador to the Congo, 1960-61; Ambassador to
Sudan, 1961-65; to Norway, 1965-68.
On his appointment as British envoy to Oslo in 1965, Scott, a keen
sailor, decided to arrive in style, but he ran his yacht Stelda, five
tons, aground 50 yards from the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club's pier, and
had to be towed clear by motorboats.
Sir Ian ahd decided to sail his yacht 25 nautical miles from the city
of Moss, at the seaward end of the Oslo Fjord, as he wanted to arrive
in a style befitting the ambassador of a sea-faring nation to another.
The arrival at the yacht club was due at noon, by Scott, and his wife,
the boatswain, kept the welcome committee and the Press waiting 75
minutes. "It wasn't the most happy landing", said an apologetic Sir
Ian.

Scott was appointed CIE in 1947; CMG in 1959; KCVO in 1965; and KCMG
in 1962.
He married in 1937, the Hon Anna Drusilla Lindsay, a daughter of the
1st Baron Lindsay of Birker, CBE, by whom he had one son and four
daughters.
A Memorial Service takes place at Aldeburgh Parish Church, Saturday 23
March, 2002, at 12 noon.

Sir Peter Scott, KBE, CMG, who died on 16 January, 2002, aged 84, was
a former British Ambassador to Norway and one-time Private Secretary
and Treasurer to Prince Michael of Kent.
