The Anglican Diocese of Derby has had seven bishops, and all of them
have combined a moderate theology with profound humanity and care for
people. Some of them were distinguished academics. Jonathan Bailey
will be remembered as someone who really cared for people, listened to
them, and was at ease in any social context.

Jonathan Sansbury Bailey was born in 1940 in Liverpool where he was
raised and was educated at Quarry Bank High School. He spent five
years in Cambridge, first at Trinity College and then doing his
ordination training at Ridley Hall.

The Right Reverend Jonathan Bailey, who has died aged 68, was Bishop
of Derby from 1995 to 2005 and proved an enterprising, forward-looking
leader combining considerable pastoral and administrative skills with
a deep concern for the Church's involvement in civic and industrial
affairs.

An admired figure throughout Derbyshire, he was a director of the
Derby City Partnership – started in 1995 to enhance city life and to
co-ordinate a variety of activities, such as children's and youth
activities and marketing. He was also on the governing council of
Derby University and, nationally, chairman of the Churches Main
Committee, which represents the mainstream Churches in dealings with
the government.
