Sir Michael Walker, GCMG, who died December 16, 2001, as the result of
a stroke, aged 85, was a retired diplomat; High Commissioner in Ceylon
and India, and Chairman of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in
the United Kingdom, 1977-87; he was born November 22, 1916; son of
Colonel C.W.G. Walker, CMG, DSO; married 1945, Enid Dorothy, daughter
of W.A. McAdam, CMG, two
children, Peterm and Tina.

Charles Michael Walker was educated at Charterhouse, and New College,
Oxford. Clerk of the House of Lords, June, 1939. Enlisted in the Army,
October, 1939, and served in the Royal Artillery until 1946 when he
was released with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. Dominions Office,
1947; First Secretary at the British Embassy at Washington, 1949-51;
Office of United Kingdom High Commissioner at Calcutta and New Delhi,
1952-5; Establishment Officer, Commonwealth Relations Office, 1955-8.
Imperial Defence College, 1958; Assistant Under Secretary of State and
Director of Establishment and Organisation, CRO, 1959-62; British High
Commissioner at Ceylon, 1962-5, (concurrently Ambassador to Maldive
Islands, July-Nov 1965), Malaysia, 1966-71; Sec. ODA, Foreign &
Commonwealth Office, 1971-3; High Commissioner, India, 1974-6;
Chairman of the Festival of India Trust, 1980-3.

He was appointed CMG, 1960; advanced to KCMG three years later, and
created GCMG in 1976.

A Service of Thanksgiving takes place on Wednesday January 9, 2002, at
12 noon, near his home, at St Mary's Church, West Chiltington, Sussex.
