has died at the age of 81.

Hugh Christopher Longuet-Higgins was born 11 April, 1923, the eldest
son of the Rev. H.H.L. Longuet-Higgins, and was educated at Winchester
and Balliol College, Oxford.

Career:Research Fellow at Balliol College, 1946-48;Lecturer and Reader
in Theoretical Chemistry, University of Manchester,1949-52; Professor
of Theoretical Physics, King's College, University of London, 1952-54;
FRSE; John Humphrey Plummer Professor of Theoretical Chemistry,
University of Cambridge, 1954-67; Royal Society Research Professor,
University of Edinburgh, 1968-74; Fellow of Corpus Christi College,
1954-67, Life Fellow, 1968; Hon Fellow, Balliol College, Oxford, 1969;
Wolfson College, Cambridge, 1977; a Governor of the BBC, 1979-84;
Warden, Leckhampton House, 1961-67; Editor of Molecular Physics,
1958-61; For. Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences;
Foreign Associate, US National Academy of Sciences, 1968.

Prof. Longuet-Higgins held numerous honorary degrees from universities
at home and abroad.
