He was born 10 August, 1933, the son of William & Catherine
Hardcastle; & was educated at Haileybury College.
Hardcastle was articled to B.W. Brixey, 1951-56; qualified in 1956; he
completed his National Service as a Sub-Lieutenant, RNVR, 1956-58.
He joined Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., (later Peat Marwick
McLintock, then KPMG), 1958; Partner, 1967; Gen. Partner, 1972-88.
He served as Department of Trade Inspector into the affairs of Saint
Piran Ltd (reported 1981); was a non-executive director of Chelsfield
from 1994.
Institute of Chartered Accountants, England & Wales: Member of the
Council, 1974-94; President, 1983-5; Chairman, London & District
Society of Chartered Accountants, 1973-74; Consultancy Committee of
Accountancy Bodies, 1983-85; President, Chartered Accountants
Students' Society of London, 1976-80.
Hardcastle was Chairman of the Regulatory Board & Deputy Chairman of
the Council of Lloyd's, 1993-97 (Member of the Council, 1987-88). He
was Master of the Company of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales,
1978-9.
He was Hon. Treasurer of the Berkeley Square Charitable Trust;
Trustee, Thalidomide Trust from 1997; Life Governor & Member of the
Council, Haileybury School, from 1998; &c.
Hardcastle was Knighted in 1992. He married firstly, 1958, (div.
1983), Dinah Beattie, by whom he had two sons, Simon and Matthew. He
married secondly, 1983, Ione (Onie) Marguerite (nee Cooney).

The music charts have never been the same since his classic homage to the
terrible Vietnam war *19* was firmly straddled atop.
*No one was really sure what was going on* Classic line, and pretty much
summed up the American attitude to virtually everything.
Didn't realise he was so old, or indeed that he had been Knighted. For
services to music presumably. Well done old fruit, you'll be missed.
Any chance of a re-release do we think? Better than some of these rock beat
combo's that masquerade in the charts these days.
Oooh...oooh...Gotta Go Dame Patti Smith is on TOTP2. (She's done well since
Prime of Miss Jean Brodie aint she?)
