Judith Countess of Listowel, who died 15 July, 2003, three days after
celebrating her centenary, was the first wife of the late 5th Earl of
Listowel, GCMG, PC (1906-1997).

She was born 12 July, 1903, as Judith de Marffy-Mantuano, daughter of
Raoul de Marffy-Manuano, of Budapest, and married Lord Listowel, as
the first of his three wives, in 1933.

Her husband had succeeded in 1931 as Baron Hare, Baron Ennismore,
Viscount Ennismore & Listowel, and Earl of Listowel. He made his
maiden speech in the House of Lords on 15 March, 1932 when he was one
of only six opposition peers, and was active in the Chamber until his
demise 65 years later.

Listowel was Chief Whip of the Labour Party in the Lords, 1940-44,
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for India & Burma, 1944-45,
Postmaster-General, 1945-47, Secretary of State for India 1947-48,
Minister of State for Colonial Affairs 1948-50, Parliamentary
Secretary to Minister of Agriculture & Fisheries 1950-51,
Governor-General & Commander-in-Chief of Ghana 1957-60, &c.

The Listowels divorced in 1945, having had one child, a daughter, Lady
Deirdre Hare, born in 1935, who married the 7th Lord Grantley.

She is survived by her daughter - now the Dowager Lady Grantley, and
by two grandsons, Richard, 8th Lord Grantley, and the Hon Francis
Norton.

Her husband,by a subsequent marriage, was the father of the present
Earl of Listowel who sits in the Lords as a Cross-Bencher.Her husband
was I think the only Labour Earl of Listowel, one of his brothers was
a Conservative Cabinet Minister.JHis grandfather(1831-1924) was I
believe the oldest peer at his death.

Quick self-correction...the 4th earl of Listowel was
born in 1833 and died in June 1924,the 4th Earl of Ducie
(born 1831) survived him by two months.
