Critchett passed the greater part of his working career as an officer
of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), apart from an early
secondment to the Diplomatic service between 1951 and 1953.
He was born 9 December, 1920, the son of Sir (George) Montague
Critchett, MVO, 2nd Baronet, by his wife, Innes, third daughter of
Colonel Francis George Archibald Wiehe, late 68th Durham Light
Infantry, & was educated at Harrow and Clare College, Cambridge.
Career: Flight Lieutenant, RAF (Voluntary Reserve); entered the
Foreign Office, 1948; was 3rd Secretary (Commercial) in Bucharest,
1951-53; 2nd Secretary in Cairo, 1956; 1st Secretary, later
Counsellor, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, 1962 (retired 1980).
He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father in 1941, and
married twice, (i) in 1948, to Paulette Mary Lorraine (who d. 1962),
daughter of Colonel Henry Brabazon Humfrey, Indian Army; (ii), 1964,
Jocelyn Daphne Margret, elder daughter of Commander Christopher
Mildmay Hall (descended from the Broughton Baronets).
He is survived by his second wife, and by a son and a daughter from
his second marriage, Charles & Xanthe. The baronetcy now devolves on
his only son, Charles George Montague, b. 2 April, 1965.
A Service of Thanksgiving takes place at St Peter's, Limpsfield,
