Lady Aarvold, who died at Dorking, 17 February, 2005, aged 95, was the
widow of Sir Carl Aarvold, the former Recorder of London - who was
dubbed "the Sportsman Judge" - in his youth he played rugby for
Headingley & England (he was captain of England in the 1930s).

Lady Aarvold was the former Noeline Etrenne Hill, born in 1909, scion
of a Yorkshire wool dynasty, youngest of the four daughters of Arthur
James Hill, of Denton Park, Ben Rhydding, near Ilkley, and a
granddaughter of the Bradford wool magnate Sir James Hill, 1st Baronet.

She married the then barrister Carl, Douglas Aarvold at St George's,
Hanover Square, London, in July, 1934. Her husband was Recorder of
Pontefract, Yorkshire, 1951-54, when he took the first of a series of
judicial appointments in London. He was Recorder of London 1964-75.

In 1965 Carl Aarvold presided at the London trial after which the Kray
brothers were cleared. He was knighted in 1968, and died 17 March,
1991, aged 83.

Lady Aarvold leaves 3 sons, CHristopher, James and John.
