Rex David [but known as Joe] Roe, was born in 1925, and educated at
the City of London School, and the University of London.
Career: he joined the Royal Air Force in 1943, and trained in Canada,
& served with the Metropolitan Fighter Sector, No. 11 Group, 203
Squadron, 1950-51; School of Maritime Reconnaissance, 1951-53; Central
Flying School and Flying Training Units, 1953-55; Commanded Royal New
Zealand Air Force Central Flying School, 1956-58; RAF Staff College,
1959; he Commanded No. 204 Squadron, 1960-62; College of Air Warfare,
1962-64; Senior Air Staff Officer No. 18 [Maritime] Group, 1964-67;
Station Commander, RAF Syerston, 1967-69; Director of Flying Training,
1969-71; Royal College of Defenec Studies, 1971; Deputy Controller
Aircraft [C], Ministry of Defence [Procurement Executive], 1972-74;
Senior Air Staff Officer, HQ Near East Air Force, 1974-76; AOC-in-C,
Training Command, 1976-77; AOC-in-C, Support Command, 1977-78; Air
Member: for Supply and Organisation, 1978-81.
Roe was appointed CB in 1974, KCB in 1977, and GCB in 1981.
He married in 1948, Helen Sophie Nairn, by whom he had one son, Peter,
and two daughters, Margaret & Elizabeth.
He is predeceased by his wife [who died in 1981], and by one of his
daughters.
The funeral will take place at Cambridge Crematorium East Chapel, 8
November, 2002, at 10 a.m.
