_. Sir Alan William Parker, CBE, the film director and writer has died aged 76.
He won eight Baftas, three Golden Globes and 2 Oscars.

He was born 14 February, 1944, son of William and Elsie Parker; married 1966, Annie Inglis [divorced 1992]; three sons, 1 daughter. Educated at Owen's School, Islington.

Career: an advertising copywriter 1965-67; Television commercials director, 1968-78; Wrote screenplay Melody 1969; wrote and directed: No Hard Feelings [1972]; Our Cissy [1973]; Footsteps [1973]; Bugsy Malone [1975]; A Turnip's Head Guide to the British Cinema [1985]; Angel Heart [1987]; Come See the Paradise [1990]; Angela's Ashes [2000]; directed: The Evacuees [1974]; Midnight Express [1977]; Fame [1979]; Shoot the Moon [1981]; The Wall [1982]; Birdy [1984]; Mississippi Burning [1989]; The Commitments [1991]; The Road to Wellville [1995]; Evita [1997],The Life of David Gale [2003]. &c.
