Bishop Hardy was Bishop of Lincoln from 1987 to 2001. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2001 for his services to the Church of England that included being Bishop for HM Prisons. In retirement he served as a honorary assistant bishop in the diocese of Carlisle.
