My mother always used to tell me that you should never try to save money by
buying cheap unbranded food. There is usually a good reason for it being
cheap and it can be false economy. This very much applies to tesco own brand
foods.

Here are some of the Tesco products we have bought over about the last year:

Tesco Cornflakes, bought just to see how they compared to Kelloggs. They
were stale, had no crispiness.
Tesco peanut butter, bought accidently instead of SunPat. Just didn't taste
as nice.
Tesco gravy powder, bought accidently instead of Bisto. Was like a watery
greasy liquid, absolutely disgusting.
Tesco Roquefort cheese from their deli. Had previously had Roquefort from a
French trip because it is allegedly the best cheese. It is strong, but
really tasty. Decided to get some more in Tesco. It was nothing like the
"French" one, tasted like pure salt.
Tesco childrens pizzas. I usually get these for my grandson if I know he is
visiting. He really likes the ones from Marks & Spencer kids range. I tried
him with a Tesco one and he nearly threw up.
Even some of their fresh fruit and veg is not as nice as M&S. Grapefruits
have been almost juiceless, but the worst thing is baking potatoes. M&S
label theirs either Marfona or Maris Piper, both ideal bakers. After 15
minutes in the microwave they come out lovely. Tesco just label theirs
Baking Potatoes because they think you just need a really big potato for it
to be a good baker. After 20 minutes in the microwave they are still hard
on the inside.

A lot of own-brand produce is _the same_ as the brands. But a lot is
rubbish, you either have to try out everything or stick with M&S or
Waitrose.

A quick guide:

Sainsbury's has both rubbish and expensive food
Somerfield's convenience food is mostly inedible but they have good
special offers, especially on wine.
Tescos is cheap
Asda is even cheaper and worse quality.
Aldi is cheaper still, about the same quality as Asda.
Lidl is the cheapest but their limited range of food is better than most
supermarkets

I do most of my shopping at Lidl and local greengrocers/bakers/butchers.

We do our main weekly shop at Tesco simply because it has the best disabled
access (my wife is in a wheelchair). For day to day shopping we go to M&S.
