Cancelling a paid for transaction

I sold an item yesterday, to a buyer in France, and he paid immediately,
via Paypal. Had a message this morning, saying he would prefer to
cancel if possible, and asked for a refund, less any Paypal fees I have
incurred, which seems reasonable.
Buyer paid me 41.90, I paid fee 1.83, leaving net payment of 40.07,
minus eBay fees. What is the best way forward, minimising losses to
both of us?

Go to the Paypal transaction page and right at the bottom there is an
'issue refund' link. This will allow you to refund the payment without
incurring any fees.
You also need to cancel the transaction to get your ebay fees back

OK, thanks. Since this morning, I have cancelled the transaction, buyer
has confirmed, and I have issued a refund via Paypal. eBay have
confirmed cancellation of FVF, Paypal have cancelled their bit and I've
issued a second chance offer. We'll see what happens next.
