I've just had a buyer who's given a BFPO address. I think that they get
postal rates subsidised to the UK rates no matter where in the world
they are so I'm not concerned about that but what about protection
against loss in transit? Will a Certificate of Posting still cover me?

Short answer YES.

Royal Mail takes the parcel to London (Mill Hill IIRC)
The RAF and Armed Forces Postal Service will take your parcel from London to
wherever in the world with signatures and tracking all the way (no online
tracking AFAIK)

You can also do signed for. I remember having the post NCO collecting
signatures on 'second post' after distributing the regular mail.

Great - an answer from someone who's been on the receiving end.

Q. What service do I use to send letters and Parcels to a BFPO address?

For items weighing under 2 kgs there is an option to use Royal Mail's HM
Forces Letter service. This service equates to a UK cost to post items
to any BFPO address. For items weighing more than 1 kg up to 30 kgs (not
all BFPO's) Parcelforce's BFPO Worldwide Parcel service is to be used.
Please be advised that the Royal Mail Standard Parcel service is not
accepted for BFPO addresses.

Q. Can I use Royal Mail's Special Delivery and Recorded Delivery services?

Yes. Please be advised that when sending money and/or jewellery to a
BFPO address, please use the Special Delivery pre-paid plastic envelope.
Items sent in customers own envelope using Special Delivery is
registered and traceable. UK compensation levels apply. Recorded
Delivery is a signed for service and is not registered. Tracking
information cannot be obtained until delivery to a BFPO address.
