Next time you want an item of mail to be redelivered, just book online and
we will deliver it on the day you choose. We can deliver either to your own
address, or to a different address in the same postcode area, free of
charge. Alternatively, for 50p, you can collect your item from a Post
Office® of your choice.
For more information, or to book a redelivery, please go to
www.royalmail.com/redelivery.
We hope you enjoy using our new service.

No, 50p if you want the item delivered to a Post Office branch.
The fee is actually payable to the Post Office, not to Royal Mail.

We had a pilot scheme here (Nottingham) a couple of years ago like this
where mail for redelivery went to your local post office instead of back
to the sorting office. You could also pay to choose a different drop
point or even some locked boxes outside Sainsburys where you could enter
a passcode to get your package.
During the trial you could never find a redirected parcel. They would
disappear and you ended up ringing round the post offices trying to find
your items. Some just disappeared completely. Eventually they gave up
and now you have to collect from the sorting office but at least you
know they are likely to have your parcel.

Note - to the Post Office Ltd., not the sub postmaster :-)
Those cards are a pain. Posties at my office use 'em, but my office
cannot offer the Local Collect scheme :-(

Depends Geep, if you're on duty that day, then the customer is effectively
paying the money to YOU.

Sorry, couldn't resist, but yes, good point.

Round our way they were trialling a system called "Safeplace" where
apparently you registered a nominated 'safe delivery place' with the
local delivery office and they will know to leave it there.

In a generous mood last week, I emailed a couple of them pointing out
that their messages had been forwarded to a newsgroup for the whole
world to see. Both bounced despite having genuine looking email addresses.
I would like to arrange for a packet to be re-deliverd to my work place.
Address is:
1 Butterwick
Rear of metro building
Hammersmith
London
W6 8DL
My address is
43 Denham House
White City Estate

You do realise that there is a progeamming glitch in the Royal Mail software
that keeps re-routing these messages to this newsgroup, possibly programmed
deliberately by someone with a warped sense of humour?
Come on Evan you've been here long enough and seen enough of these to know
that these people are not deliberately sending their messages to a newsgroup
& probably don't even realise this newsgroup even exists never mind be able
to read your reply to 'them'. I'd expect a fuckwit like Enzo (aka Jason
Drake) to not realise this but you're fairly clued up on Usenet.
--

Niel, I'm 99% sure it isn't a "glitch" in RM's software. I'd be interested
in any evidence you have to back that comment up (don't mean to sound like a
dick, I really would like to see anything to help get it fixed if it is RM's
fault, but I'm 99% it isn't).

I don't think it is either: if you look at the RM website, the redelivery
option is a proper webform. I think some twonk has posted a message on that
newsreader site, and people keep hitting it.
Can't think what else it could be. These messages come from different people
and different addresses so I can't see how it could be anything other than a
programming error. I reckon there have been at least 20 of these sent to the
newsgroup now from various people, all of whom have never previously posted
to this newsgroup so it would be a hell of a co-incidence that all these
people somehow manage to put uk.people.consumer.ebay into a webform by
accident!

Did you look at the link on that newsreader site? It seems to resolve to a
post to here.... And the RM webform is VERY specific. Hm. Maybe I'll go test
it out. :)
I know exactly why now!
From experience (from my job) a lot of people, when entering a URL, don't
realise they have to enter it into the address bar. Instead they go to
google and type in the url in the search box.
Do a google for www.royalmail.com/redelivery and check out the 2nd result.
I rest my case.

But an honest one, I dare say.
Reminds me of a classified ad in a Monty Python book I read years ago :
"Going away this year ? Be sure to let us know.
Stan & Nobby"
Dear Sir.
No problem, Ask your neighbours to ignore the man in the mask with the
striped jersey carrying his postbag marked *SWAG*
Sorry he does'nt carry keys,He'll open the door with a crow bar and place
your parcel in a safe place inside.
As a precaution he'll remove any valuables from the home for safe keeping,
Please call 999 for assistance.
Kind Regards, Royal Mail.
hehe.
even if this had gone directly to RM I still wouldn't tell them I was
going to be away for a week. Some people need saving from themselves!!

Evan,
If these people were users here I doubt they'd make the post in the
first place. Surely it would be better to try and stop the posts by
contacting the site / poster who set up the darned stoooopid thing in
the first place.
Failing that - email each and every one of the individuals to let them
know they've made a bit of a boo-boo. Assuming they understand how the
magic cyberposting world works or are able to accept an explanation,
that is.

It is the term we use at work. It's actually French for 'the user' but
Evan forgot the apostrophe ;)

Did you email that to him as well as posting here? That would have been
kind.
I doubt that he reads this newsgroup on a regular basis, or even knows
of its existence, come to that.
