Who here would be interested in a munch set somewhere in the North
East? The nearest one I have found so far is in Manchester. Surely
there must be enough of us around Yorkshire, Durham, Cleveland
etc to make it worthwhile.

Excellent idea Matt. Jayne and I have been discussing the very same thing. We
had thought York, as that was convenient for both of us, and what with all the
other parties going on at the moment, probably late April? Any thoughts?

York sounds good to me. I'm t the southern end of county Durham so York
is an easy jaunt for me. How many more out there can we attract?

Sounds quite possible. We seem to be aiming for York so maybe
Jane could suggest a time/place.

I could get to a daytime thing in York, but couldn't do evenings. Didn't
someone mention Nottingham ? I've got this horrible feeling I'm missing
things on a grand scale, I think Demon must be having problems. If anyone
has any info on a Nottingham meet please could they mail it to me, I'm not
seeing posts, just hearing rumours.

York is a fair stretch for me, but do-able. Nottingham would be very easy

Only trouble is, as I thought might happen, if we try and arrange too many at
once, people get confused about which is which!!! To my knowledge, there is a
Brum munch before Moonman's Dream and a Cambridge munch with dates already set
and a Nottingham and a York? meet in the planning stage. As there is so much
going on in the next few weeks, and I'm not able to get out to check venues,
can we postpone serious planning till after the Dream???? Or alternatively, if
Yassmin62 (in Leeds) already knows a good venue in Leeds??? It's not 'much'
further than York for the NE team, and I suspect that travel connections would
be much easier for those travelling any distance :-) OK, so it hasn't got
York Dungeon.....

Leeds should be OK for me and I would think that most of the NE crowd
could make it. We get used to travelling long distances so a trip down to
Leeds should no problem. All we need now is a venue and date sometime
maybe late April -?

As the person who set this thread going, I think I can say that we are
settled on
it being in Leeds either in late April or early May. The sort of venue we
need is
somewhere easy to reach from a rail station or by car. So a quiet pub on the
outskirts of the city would be ideal, preferably close to main A roads so
complex directions aren't needed and within an easy cab ride from Leeds
station.

We may be evrywhere, but we haven't got this mucnh sorted out yet.
We are looking for a date in late April or early May, and a venue in
either Leeds or York. If anyone knows of a nice quiet pub with good
connection/parking can they e-mail me direct (rather than put it on the
newsgroup). If we get the munch going, we would only want to tell
people the venue when they commit to going.

No, no, no!!!!

It needs to be a free for all, all welcome, same as the Cambridge one!!!

25th April had been suggested, particularly as it's the day after a Bradford
'Night of the Bitter Rose' Friday.

I still don't know if I'm free that weekend, but am trying to find out - work

I agree it needs to be a free for all. I was just thinking of the same
precautions used in the Manchester munch to prevent gawkers turning
up to have a look at the pervs.

The more the merrier. Since I put the idea forward, I've been amazed
and gratified by the number of people who've said they were interested.

But this is a vanilla pub meet, no play involved. The gawkers would be mighty
bored, and who gives a damn anyway, they'd only turn up if they were actually
interested, so a bit of a contradiction in terms.

Which is when they would get tempted to 'intrude'. I'm speaking
from experience of groups of townies wanting to force their way into
social groups of students. If this sort of thing happens, it
quickly gets very unstable.

> and who gives a damn anyway,

If this happened to us, it would spoil the venue for future
events, and could well derail the munch.

> they'd only turn up if they were actually interested,
> so a bit of a contradiction in terms.

Nope. We were worried about locals finding out by chance,
and waiting to see what turned up, not about people travelling
miles to watch.

By letting everyone attend who asks for info, we don't discourage
genuine people, and we also got an idea of the numbers.
Initially we were worried there might only be 5 or 6 of us there
and that sort of meet is very vulnerable to a being distrupted.
But the Manchester Munches get at least a dozen people, so after
the first half hour, that's a not a problem.

One of the main aims of the Munches was to have meets which
would feel safe for newcomers (just as the #submissionUK
meets in London were started with that intention.) Being
careful about the (small) risk of gawkers and the privacy
of people coming, was part of that aim.

It depends on the venue, and how many people are coming,
but there are times when it is worth not publicising
the location.

Take care everyone,

Tanos

From 'A Brief History of Munches' at http://www.soj.org/munch.html

The Munch has become a way to meet folks that are into BDSM in an
informal and hassle-free environment. Usually the setting for a
"munch" is a restaurant or coffee shop or similar environment.
Munches have become a common occurence nationwide (and in a few
cases..worldwide) thanks to the Internet.

Take care,

Tanos

Yes, I've seen that happen, but that's why the choice of venue is *so*
important, and why I'm nervous about the York idea because I don't know the
place well enough to suggest a pub where I have a very high degree of
confidence that this wouldn't happen. I'm hoping with having someone living in
Leeds that they would be able to recommend such a pub.

>> and who gives a damn anyway,

As I say, if it happens, you've picked the wrong pub anyway, and probably would
be time to adjourn elsewhere, leaving directions for stragglers.

Sounds a little paranoid, sorry. We've had several UAP meets now, another
group with a pervy reputation, and never had this problem.

OK, then we've got different expectations of what would sway people towards not
coming. My experience has been that people don't want to commit, they need an
'escape route'. Asking them to apply for details/confirm attendence would have
put those people off. They are not at all bothered by 'privacy' once at the
munch, cos they will be with a group of friends and take confidence in numbers.
The thing that seems to freak people most is actually going into a place on
their own, which is why I'm meeting at least one person in my hotel foyer in
Brum, so she has someone to walk in with, then I suspect she will be fine (-
same service available for anyone else in the same position for Brum!!). But,
you see, I'm used to talking to fem subs about it, perhaps others are

I take your points, and suspect, as you say, that it's probably more important
for smaller meets. However, from the response so far, I'm hoping that this one
is going to be of reasonable size. I doubt we'll meet the heady heights of the
attendence levels at Sheffield, boy, was that something, but still be big
enough :-)

Hello again,
I have been watching the response to the idea of the Northern munch to see if
the group has decided on York or Leeds. As I said earlier I would help if it is
Leeds that everyone agrees upon. Scorpy and I have talked about a possible
venue for a Saturday noon-afternoon venue that is easily accessible to everyone
and we have one suggestion for now, the Arts Cafe..it is not a pub but it is a
tolerant trendy place and within a two minute walk from the train and coach
stations. It is reasonably priced..the only catch is that they all know me in
there.. :) but hey anything for the cause <well maybe not anything>. Plus it is
just round the corner from Cafe Junction <otherwise known the Fruit Cupboard>
which has a fetish night once a month and may be worth pointing out to people
in the North :)

I am rambling on I guess <g> okay..I will be at the Birmingham party Saturday
maybe I will know by then if you guys want me to try and sort something out in
Leeds. Otherwise, I am equally pleased to meet everyone in York if that is
where everyone decides they would rather go..

Wow that sounded really serious..

Yass :)

A munch is a meeting of people from the newsgroup and/or the IRC channels
#BDSM-UK and #SUBMISSIONUK.

I think, but am not certain that Munch derives from the original meetings
being at lunchtime.

Or indeed a non-scene, non-dress code, non-play meet of BDSM folks generally.

The term is a shortened version of the extremely ugly Burgermunch which was
the name given to such events by their 'merican inventors.

A Saturday afternoon in Leeds would be great for me. The venue sounds
similar to the one we had for the Sheffield do, and it was completely
suitable. Don't worry about being well known there, I'm a familiar face at
the place we used and there was no problem, I've been back there several
times since and they're still friendly !

Sounds great Yass! What street is the Arts Cafe on? I think the consensus
was more in favour of Leeds anyway. I have had a number of direct e-mails
from interested people and Leeds seemed to be the preffered option among
them so Leeds it is (unless there is now a pro-York outcry!). All we need
now is a date (late April?) and a signal so that newcomers will know which
group of beutiful people in the cafe is the Northern Munch! Standing an A-Z
on
the table seems like a popular idea.

So far as I am concerned mate, someone has to hammer a stake in the ground
sooner or later. I reckon that should be your honour since you proposed the
meet. I suggest you fix a date and venue which suits you, and the rest of
us will get there if we can, and hope to make the next one if we miss it!!

All the best ;-)

Ok, that sounds good. Let's nail it down at the Arts Cafe on the 25th April
(Saturday) from about 1pm to 6pm. A Leeds A-Z prominently displayed
should be used by the first to arrive as a signal for everyone. Now can
someone please tell me what street the Arts Cafe is on?

OK, two choices peeps, either we leave poor wittle Jayne high and dry, when she
was one of the instigators of the Northern munch, or we postpone it till a
later date that she can make, and make a little space in all our diaries that
are currently full to bursting with other munches? Maybe even postpone it a
full month and do the Saturday after the May 'Night of the Bitter Rose', 30th
May. Any thoughts?

Thanks guys! Its nice to be wanted...
I can make virtually any other weekend! April 18th, any saturday/sunday
in May.

> Maybe even postpone it a full month and do the Saturday after the May

I wouldn't want it postponed a whole month just because of me - that's
almost a big enough gap to have one on the 25th Aprl and one on the 30th
May!

What's happened is I've been dead lucky and won a week's canoe(dl)ing
course at an outward bounds centre - a competition on a local radio
station. Unfortunately it happens over the weekend of the munch. It
clashes with whitby gothic weekend too :-(

Anyway, thanks! It would be great if we did reschedule, but "the needs of
the many" and all that... I'll leave it up to Matt and a date the majority
of people can make...

As one who's diary is also fit to explode, I'd like to second Jane's suggestion
to postpone until the end of May. A Saturday following Bradford makes a great
deal of sense for those who will be travelling some distance and want to attend
both events (me me me!!!), and of course Jayne has to come along!

How does this sound to everyone else?

May 30th has also been advertised in the events list for the
Manchester Munch. We left a gap in the 4-week Manchester cycle
on Sat 2nd May free when we thought the Northern meet might be
the first week of May and because of the #submissionUK meet in
London that night.

How about 2nd May for the Northern Munch, Matt?

How very unimaginative (g). Ask Haz if you can see the Sadeo Hasegawa
book before you make a definite decision on number of candles...

What was the original posting please ..... candles on the table at the munch??,
or ....... At one US munch the symbol of recognition is black balloons. I like
that. Or am I totally on the wrong track?

Fraid so. We're just discussing Jane's birthday candle(s).

Hello..

I thought it was almost time for a Northern munch update..I have checked with
the Arts Cafe about possible reservations..and they won't take reservations for
Saturday afternoon..apparently their busiest time of the weekend. But don't get
discouraged!! :o)

The place is small..but it can provide seats for most of us..and there is a bar
where people can stand..if we don't arrive there by the hundreds we will be
okay :o)

Again the venue is the Arts Cafe..on Call Lane..right next to the Corn Exchange
in Leeds City Centre..there are two parking lots on either side of the Corn
exchange.. There is also parking at the train station and the coach
station..both within two minute walk of the venue..

See you there :o)

Thanks Yass, I was going to go down there to have a look at the place, but
you seem to have it covered.

Is anyone going on to the event in Manchester after the munch? (Club Lash
I think it's called -- a new one) I know that the Night of the Bitter Rose
is also
the night before, but some people seem to have plenty of stamina!

Hello again :o)

It seems that the Northern city of Leeds is about to be swamped by the cutest
and loveliest group of perverts they have ever seen..and the Arts
cafe..wonderful as it is..probably will not take us all :o((( This is NOT a
change of venue..but since Scorpy and I are such efficient subbies <okay
okay..so maybe we not that efficient> we have looked at our options in the
area. Arts Cafe is on Call Lane..just off the Corn Exchange in the Leeds City
Centre..Sparrows Wharf is a pub that is only about one minute away..On The
Calls, which is part of the inner city loop...and is equipped to take as many
people as we can muster..I am posting this to say that we may have to move from
the Arts cafe to Sparrows Wharf..to accomodate the extra people...to ensure
that no one is lost..I am willing to give my mobile number out to those who
want it..and e-mail me for it..if more information is needed on the whereabouts
of Sparrows Wharf..pls contact me.

Thank you for showing so much interest in Leeds..

Yass :o)

Just thought I'd flag this l post up a bit more prominently, in case people
were getting complacent and actually thinking that everything was cut and dried
for the 25th.. <g>

So, later arrivals on Saturday, if you get to the Arts Cafe and there's nobody
there with A-Z's, we'll be just around the corner at Sparrow's Wharf.
Incidentally, you might want to eat first, as Sparrows Wharf doesn't serve food
all afternoon - there are plenty of places to eat on Call Lane and around the
Corn Exchange.

Looking forward to seeing you all!
