Readership/Lectureship in Astronomy

Applications are invited for a Lectureship to be held within the
Institute for Astronomy (IfA). The IfA undertakes a broad research
programme in cosmology, AGN, star formation, low mass stars, and wide
field astronomy, and is co-located with the UK Astronomy Technology
Centre at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh. See http://www.roe.ac.uk. We
are interested in any high-quality candidate whose research interests and
expertise can either link with or enhance/complement the current research
activities within the IfA, and who can contribute to the developing field
of Astro-biology. The theme of Astro-biology is a key collaborative
initiative linking the University of Edinburgh and the University of St.
Andrews within the recently formed Scottish Universities Physics Alliance
(SUPA), and it is hoped that the successful applicant will play an
important role in the development of this joint venture. The post is to
start on 1 October 2005, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The University of Edinburgh is a member of SUPA (http://www.supa.ac.uk),
a new trans-institutional alliance that creates a common strategy for
physics research across Scotland.

Salary Scale (under review): Lecturer £23,643 - £27,116 p.a. (AT2A) or
27,989 - £35,883 p.a. (AT2B). Reader £37,558 - £42,573 p.a. (AT3).

SUPA Advanced Fellowship – Technology for Experimental & Observational
Physics

Applications are invited for an Advanced Fellowship funded through the
Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA) to be held at the Institute
for Astronomy (IfA). The IfA undertakes a broad research programme in
cosmology, AGN, star formation, low mass stars, and wide field astronomy,
and is co-located with the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (UKATC) at the
Royal Observatory Edinburgh. See http://www.roe.ac.uk. The Fellow will
work within the UK ATC, and will join a new Scottish collaboration
targeted at the development of leading-edge technology for observational
astronomy, gravitational wave detection, and particle physics experiment.
This collaboration - TEOPS - links the UK ATC and IfA in Edinburgh with
the Institute for Gravitational Research and the Particle Physics
Research Group at the University of Glasgow, and is a key initiative
within SUPA. We seek high-calibre candidates with experience of
mechanical and/or electronic aspects of R&D for detectors and
instrumentation including the appropriate state-of-the-art hardware and
design and modeling tools. There is considerable scope for innovation in
the development of novel devices and systems, with candidates expected to
show how they can use the opportunities of this joint initiative to
develop new technologies of great benefit to the science goals of the
partners.
