1 JOBS: Data Mining Applications Scientist - Edinburgh
Expires: 31-Jul-2005

University of Edinburgh - Institute for Astronomy

Data Mining Applications Scientist

The University of Edinburgh seeks an astronomer with research experience
in the analysis of large sky survey datasets and a proven aptitude for
software development to join the team in the Wide Field Astronomy Unit
(WFAU) of the Institute for Astronomy developing and curating the Science
Archives for the WFCAM and VISTA sky survey instruments.

You will be responsible for the development of tools enabling users to
perform efficient statistical analyses of the multi-Tbyte Science Archives
curated by WFAU and will investigate the hardware provision required to
support a Science Archive data analysis service within the context of the
developing global Virtual Observatory. You will be encouraged to use
personal research interests as motivation for tool development, but must
also capture requirements from the survey consortia to reflect the wider
science drivers behind the survey programmes.

Candidates must possess a PhD in astronomy or a related field, and should
have an ongoing programme of research centred on the statistical analysis
of large sky survey datasets. Experience with relational databases would be
an advantage, as would knowledge of data structures and algorithms used in
data mining.

The WFAU software development team work in a variety of languages (Python,
Java, Perl, C/C++ and SQL) and use collaborative tools such as CVS.
Experience of working in such a team is desirable, as is previous exposure
to the standards being developed within the international Virtual
Observatory community.

The post is available as soon as possible and initial appointment will be
for three years, with the possibility of extension subject to funding.
Appointment will be on the Research Associate AR1A scale,
GBP 19,460 - 27,989, depending on qualifications and experience.
