The Centre for Astrophysics seeks to fill the newly-created Chair in
Theoretical or Computational Astrophysics with a person of outstanding
international research reputation in the areas of solar physics,
astrophysical modelling or computational astrophysics. The Professor
will provide academic leadership in research and teaching, pro-actively
supporting postgraduate and undergraduate developments. Success in
winning funding and publication in high-impact journals are also
essential. The CFA is located on the University's main campus, a pleasant
site near the centre of Preston,. Immediately outside the city is the
Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; the Lake District,
Peak District and the Yorkshire Dales are each only an hour away. Preston
has excellent communications with the rest of the country; London and
Edinburgh are less than three hours away by direct train. There are
abundant cultural events in Preston and nearby Manchester. The CFA
research areas include: solar physics, solar-terrestrial physics, stellar
and galactic astrophysics, extragalactic astronomy and observational
cosmology. The CFA is part of the UK Southern African Large Telescope
Consortium, currently lead by Professor Gordon Bromage, Head of Centre.
This provides access to a world-class 10-m telescope, and smaller
facilities at SAAO. The Solar Physics group are involved in Solar-B and
Solar Orbiter. The University has recently acquired an SGI Altix 28-node
parallel-processing computer. CFA staff are eligible to apply for time on
the UKb observational and computational national facilities.
