Hi,

I'm trying to set up PPPoE for a new FTTC line and I'm looking at the LCP
echo options. I know AAISP send a PPP LCP echo every second, and according
to http://wiki.aa.org.uk/index.php/Line_Options there's an option to reduce
the timeout to 5 seconds. But what is the normal standard timeout value? I'm
thinking that it would be a good idea to set the timeout on my side to
slightly longer than AAISP's value. Does this seem reasonable? I don't want
to unnecessarily tear down a working connection, but OTOH I want to detect
and restart a dead connection as quickly as possible.

Thanks,

Roger

On a related note, I've only just noticed the ETRN option on the login
details page. How should this work? The popup says "List of domain, or
server:domain to which ETRN is sent on login". I assume if I put my domain
in it will send an ETRN command to an AAISP SMTP server (which one?) or to a
server of my choice. Should this work with tertiary-mx? A while back someone
here said they used ETRN with tertiary-mx but at the time I didn't have any
need for it so I didn't ask any for any details.

I tried entering "tertiary-mx.co.uk:rilynn.me.uk", sending an email to
tertiary-mx and resetting my ADSL connection but it didn't appear to have
any effect, with it taking more than an hour for the email to eventually be
delivered. Should this work? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Roger

Telnetting to tertiary-mx and issueing an ETRN command very quickly results
in mail being delivered, so that bit works. Is there a problem with the ETRN
option on the configuration pages or does it not do what I think it should do?

If I can't get it to work I can make do with a 6 line if-up script using
expect and netcat instead.

Hi Roger,

The standard LCP timeout is 60 seconds.

It doesn't matter. The link will be dropped which ever timeout is hit
first. So something like 60 seconds, or less if bonding.

It appears to be working, what time did you try?

Many thanks,

I was wondering what happened if one end thought the connection had dropped
but the other hadn't noticed yet. It doesn't really matter - I've set it to
60 seconds and I'll see how it goes.

tertiary-mx.co.uk accepted an email for me at 22:04:50 tonight. I reset my
modem at 22:07:37 and the connection came back up at 22:09:01 but the mail
wasn't delivered until 22:52:45.

Thanks,

Roger
