Quite an interesting thread in eternal-september.support on spam getting
into a moderated group. See "Why is there so much spam on
talk.origins?". An explanation of sorts appears at
<lruxjdgp...@v.nguard.lh>, suggesting there is little or no spam
filtering at that newsgroup.

Have the moderators at ulm noticed a greater amount of spam from Google
Groups recently that they have had to deal with, or has the robot
moderation dealt with it pretty successfully?

There is an inordinate amount of "sex spam" sent to the ULM submission
address, which the spammers see as an 'ordinary' mailbox and now it is
on their spam lists, the sex spam arrives with increasing frequency.

I think part of the problem is that pure HTML submissions are
auto-rejected by the modbot with a response requesting that the post be
resubmitted in plain text. That works well for humans mistakenly
posting in HTML, but sex spam bots see the reply as confirmation of a
valid, working address actively being read by a human and respond to the
request not to send HTML posts by sending and ever-increasing volume of
spam to the ULM submission address.

It is coming up to 11am. So far today I have rejected 10 sex spam posts
and approved 8 posts with 2 auto-approved posts.

I can't review any of those posts to see if they were posted via Google
Groups but, serendipitously, as I am typing this message another piece
of sex spam has just arrived and, having looked at it, I can see that it
has no connection whatsoever to Google Groups. (It would appear to have
been injected via an authenticated session on emaxglobal.com.)

There's a post in ulm immediately after your most recent one entitled
"Breast Selection Operator. Aleta loves to jump on your dick".

Must be a Christmas present from the moderators :-)

I regret to say that the post to which you are referring is entirely on me.

I approved the post instead of rejecting it and discarding it.

I shall don my stout hessian undergarments for the remainder of the day
whenever I'm moderating posts so that I may repent in sackcloth and ashes.

The biggest problem is that the moderation system doesn't auto-reject (or
discard) messages which lack a Newsgroups: header. Doing so would deal with
99% of your spam, with zero false positives.

But we've discussed this before, and the conclusion appears to be that the
software is so crufty that even what appears to be a relatively simple
change is, in fact, a major undertaking that the administrators are,
justifiably, unwilling to commit their limited resources of time and
motivation to. And there isn't really a quick and simple way to solve this.

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to say thank you. It really
is appreciated.

And I'll show my gratitude for your appreciation by trying not to
approve any more sex spam. :-)

I never saw it, something else took it out.

FWIW, I don't care about a slip, or even many slips, getting rid of the
bulk of it is more than enough for me. So thank you from me, too.

Meanwhile at uram we get the likes of:-

Instant Two-Way Language Translator
The Number 1 Kitchen Knife in the World
Seat Cushion
Melt fat fast
Flexi Mop 360
Power of Wireless Cleaning with Synoshi

No sex please, we're radio hams.

Most of it gets rejected by the modbot.

We could swap our respective spam piles to mix things up for each team
of moderators?

My life may be enriched immeasurably by learning about the "Power of
Wireless Cleaning with Synoshi". :-)
