There seems to be a fault in Thunderbird that's causing problems with
replies.

I'll try to explain what's going on by way of an example.

In the NG view, there's a list of messages with 'subject', 'from', and
'date'.

I can see one that shows in the list as being from Fredxx (22/11/2023 18.36)

But, when I click on it, it opens a message from Jeff Layman
(22/11/2023) 16:18.

Is this just my TB installation, or is this more widespread?

That message was viewable immediately I posted it on the solani news
server (posting with solani), but was not visible for several hours on
the eternal-september server, as some maintenance was being carried out
on it. What happens if you unsubscribe and resubscribe to unnm? Do you
get the same outcome, or does Fredxx's message now show?

It's entirely likely that's due to local file corruption on your
computer, but it's conceivable that's due to the overview file being
corrupted on the eternal-september server. You'd need to ask in
eternal-september.support about that. They will find it helpful
if you provide the Message-ID of the article in question.

Have you got threads collapsed or expanded (\ or *)
Are you filtering the view in any way?

In short no I don't get what you're describing, if I focus on a specific
message in the list pane, I get that message in the message pane.

I tried unsubscribing and resubscribing, and that fixed it. As Jon said,
maybe some local files are corrupted?

I'll do the same for ULM, as I think I had the same issue there.

Works in my TB so probably just you.

This sounds like your folder message index has been corrupted.
You can repair this less disruptively by right-clicking[1] on the
newsgroup title in the folder pane on the left. Choose properties
from the menu that appears then, on the General Information tab,
click on the Repair Folder button then OK.

Again, with pictures:

[1] left-clicking if you have a left-handed mouse.

Thanks for that, I'd forgotten that option existed. Completely
independently of the problems GB is having, an email folder which should
have around 450 messages in it appeared to have completely emptied
itself. Clicking on "Repair Folder" has fixed it.

I use that all the time to clear up NG folders. However, note that some
time ago the TB devs changed the default from downloading xxx headers to
downloading /all/ headers. If you don't notice that and click on ok, you
could be in for a long wait if there are a million+ headers available to
download!

It happens - sometimes - with older versions of TB. I use such a
version, mainly because it allows me to customise the "next action"
buttons. Newer versions don't seem anything like so user friendly.
