First Call for Applications for the UK Usenet Committee
Open Class (Three Vacancies)

Please note that, in this Call for Applications, all email addresses,
including the application address, are munged with (at) replacing the @,
in accordance with standard practice.

Applications and Nominations are requested for the "Open" class of
membership of the UK Usenet Committee.

There are currently three Open Vacancies.

Votetaker for the 2020 UK Usenet Committee Election:

Primary: Jon Ribbens <jribbens (at) ukvoting (dot) org (dot) uk>

========================================================================

Distribution:

This CFA has been posted to the following newsgroups:

uk.net.news.announce
uk.net.news.config
uk.net.news.management

========================================================================

This CFA contains the following sections:

1. Definition of Open Class of Membership
2. Application Requirements
3. Persons retiring from the Committee
4. Standard Voting Instructions
5. Instructions on how to obtain an application form and template

========================================================================

Definition of Open Class of Membership

Any participant in the uk.* hierarchy qualifies as a candidate in the
Open class.

========================================================================

Application Requirements

Any participant in the uk.* hierarchy qualifies as a nominator for the
Open class.

Any individual may nominate a maximum of three candidates.

========================================================================

Applications must be received by 23:59:59 BST, 19th October 2020.

========================================================================

Each candidate must receive four nominations. The nominators must
confirm support for their candidate(s) by replying to an email from the
votetaker. Replies must be received by 23:59:59 BST, 19th October 2020.

Please note that the usual voting rules on email address validity also
apply to all application and nomination emails. An application or
nomination cannot be accepted if the votetaker is unable to verify the
identity of the sender.

If a candidate fails to attract four confirmations from their nominators
by that deadline, they will not qualify for this round of elections.

NOTE: All applications will be released to the community by a posting
from a votetaker handling the elections as soon as they are received and
confirmed by similar method once the nominators have confirmed their
nomination.

Please note that there will not be a period of grace for confirmations
after the deadline of 23:59:59 BST, 19th October 2020.

If candidates wish to supply more than the minimum four nominators, they
may do so. The first four qualifying confirmations received from
nominators will be announced by the votetaker as the official nominators
for each candidate.

In the event of there being more than three "Open" Candidates an
election will be held during October 2020.

Applications *MUST* be sent to com2020a (at) vote.ukvoting.org.uk.

========================================================================

Persons retiring from the Committee

In accordance with the Committee Document, the following Open Class
Members have served a full three year term and are deemed to be retiring
from the Committee. They are eligible for re-election.

Mark Goodge
Fiona Gostling (aka 'Kat')
Chris Newport

========================================================================

Note: To bring the Call for Applications into line with other votes in
the uk.* hierarchy, prospective candidates now need to request an
Application Form via the autoresponder.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

If you fail to follow the instructions below your application may
be ruled invalid. This means your application will not be accepted.

1) One person, one application.

2) No two candidates may apply from the same email address.
In the event that only one address is available to two persons
who both wish to apply, both these persons should contact the
votetaker prior to applying.

3) Applications must be emailed directly from the applicant to the
address specified by the votetaker.

4) There may be technical reasons, such as breaks in the email
headers of your ballot, which may mean that the votetaker is
unable to confirm the validity of your application. The votetaker
will contact you if there are any irregularities.

If you have followed the application instructions correctly, you will
receive an acknowledgement of your application within five days from the
votetaker.

This does not always mean that your application is valid. The votetaker
will contact you if there is a problem with your application.

If you do not receive an acknowledgement of receipt of your application
form within five days you should contact the votetaker.

If the acknowledgement "bounces" back to the votetaker (the mail
containing the acknowledgment is returned as undeliverable by a
mailserver), your application will not be accepted.

It is your responsibility to ensure that your application form has been
received by checking that the acknowledgement arrives. You should
also check that your application is recorded correctly in the
acknowledgement. If there are any problems with your
acknowledgement, you should contact the votetaker.

===================================================================

HOW TO APPLY

Please read the instructions carefully.

The email address that will be published in the list of candidates is
the one that the application form was sent to. So for example if an
application form was sent to exampl...@ukvoting.org.uk, this would
be the address shown in the list of candidates. This address has to be
valid, otherwise you will not receive an application form.

To receive an application form, you must send an email to the
Application Request Address, which is com2...@request.ukvoting.org.uk
<URL:mailto:com2...@request.ukvoting.org.uk>.

For most news-reading software, just replying by email to this post
will address your email correctly, but *please check* that the
address above is actually in the To field before you send the mail.

We recognise that sometimes people submit their applications from
different addresses for varying reasons, especially when more than
one email address is available to an applicant. If you want the list of
candidates to record your application as coming from a different address
to that from which you post your request, you can do this by putting the
address you want recorded in the Reply-To field in your application form
request. If you do not know how to do this, or if you are unable
for whatever reason, then put the address you want recorded in the
Subject line of your application form request instead.

Note: Please remember that you must be able to read email sent to
the address you choose to use as your application address, otherwise
you will be unable to retrieve your application form and you will be
unable to apply.

If you change the Subject field in your email to contain the
address you want to use, it doesn't matter whether you also include
your name or not, and it doesn't matter whether you enclose your
application address in <angle brackets> or not.

It also doesn't matter whether you quote this entire post or
delete everything when making your ballot request.

THE REPLY TO YOUR REQUEST

If the autoresponder understands your application address in the Subject
or other fields, it will send an application form immediately to that
address. This ballot paper will be personalised and unique to the
application address used.

===================================================================

SUBMITTING YOUR APPLICATION

Your personalised application form will contain an application ID and
will have your application address prefilled for your convenience.

Do not change either of these or your application will not be valid. If
you want to use a different application address you must request
another application form for the new address.

1) Enter the name under which you want your application recorded in the
list of candidates. This must be either your real name or the
pseudonym ("handle") which you normally use to post to usenet.

2) Enter the names and email addresses of at least four people who
have agreed to nominate you. The votetaker will request verification
from each one prior to your application being confirmed.

If more than four nominators are given, only the first four to
respond will be listed in the Call for Votes if one is required.

3) Supply a personal statement of under 15 lines (72 characters per line
is the general rule of thumb). This step is optional, but recommended.

4) Send your application.

You may resubmit your application, with different/additional nominators,
at any time up to the close of the application period. Your
identification details on the resubmitted application form must be the
same as earlier ones. Repeat applications will be resolved in favour of
the last valid application form.

If you ignore any of these instructions, your application may be
rejected as invalid. This includes, but is not limited to, any false
answers given on the application form or any attempt to circumvent the
"one person, one application" rule or to conceal your identity.

===================================================================

The application form will contain the following questions.

The questions are shown below so that you know what you will
be asked on the application form. You cannot use this to apply,
you must request an application form.

Sections A and B MUST be completed for your nomination to be considered.
Section C is optional, but recommended.

A. Candidate - Name and Email Address:

Name :
Email:

B. Nominators - Name and Email Address

1. Name :
1. Email:

2. Name :
2. Email:

3. Name :

5. (continue the sequence if required)

C. A short ( < 15 lines ) paragraph on yourself (optional):

I'll second: Reay, Scummins. Evans, or Cole.

Or any combination, thereof.

Can the dead take up the vacancy on the committee?

In Scummins's case, I reckon it would make him more electable. And
improve his performance as a committee member.

Vote Paul!

Thank you for the support. I’ll put you down on the application as a
nominator.

Who else will join us on this noble quest to install me in my rightful
place on the UK Usenet KKKommittee?

VOTE PAUL!

Prisoners aren’t allowed internet access.

Maybe in 7 years under another name.

In message <rkqo9p$qf$1...@dont-email.me>, mm0fmf <no...@invalid.com> writes
In these enlightened times, being dead is no longer an impediment to
holding office. In some cases, it can even be an advantage.

If Scummins is brown bread, it would be a nice touch for him to achieve
his long-held goal of being on The Committee. And it's not as if having
a dead committee member would make any difference to the running of
uk.*.

it would be a nice match for UKRAM being dead .....

Yeah, that would be a genuinely nice thing, tbh, but only if Scummins was
actually dead, which he isn’t, and also if he wasn’t a total scumbag his
entire life.
