Clifford T Ward dies today at the age of 57.
He had his first (and only) hit single "gaye" back in 1973
Many artists had recorded has material , like Justin Hayward
Colin Bluntstone, Artie Garfunkel, Judy Collins & Cliff Richard
For the insiders, he's the greatest songwriter that England has ever
produced in this century.
Let's hope his death will bring some revivial to his music

That's one hell of a prediction.

I thought it was very sad to hear of the suicide of Big Country's lead
singer/guitarist Stuart Adamson, who was only 43.

Two pieces of very sad news. Ward is probably only remember, by those who
remember him at all, for "Gaye". But he wrote so many more wonderful,
literate songs. I always bought his albums as they came out, and love them
all.

When I first heard Stuart Adamson and Big Country, I hoped I was hearing the
future of popular music. Very catchy songs and a brilliant, distinctive
sound. But no-one else went that way, and the band faded away. A real pity.

Sad news certainly but is he really the "greatest songwriter that England
has ever produced" ?

Cliff wrote better lyrics. Nick wrote stronger tunes. My vote still goes to
Nick, but they are both wonderful. WERE both wonderful, I guess.

On the subject of Clifford T Ward, can you please tell me when his
single "Wherewithal" was released and was it before "Gaye" or after.

As I recall, after (in the UK at least).

It was released in the summer of 1973, after Gaye which i think
was several months before.

I liked "Scullery", that was a few months later. Still unbelievable that it
wasn't a major hit.
