There'll be a distribution tree; I'll make a number of copies here at the
"root" of the tree and send them out to "branches", who in turn send them
on to "leaves" (who don't have to distribute further) and possibly
second-level branches.
I propose to do this along usual tape/cd trading lines: if you have
something that your supplier finds interesting to trade, great. If you
do not, then your branch will do the trade on a "blanks & postage" basis.
Good explanatory page here: http://www.mcnichol.com/bnp/
That is: you, the eventual recipient, address a suitable mailing envelope
_to yourself_, put a blank CD in, stamp the whole thing with the correct
postage but do not seal, put it a larger envelope and mail the whole
thing to your branch. He opens the outer envelope, burns the show onto
your disc (or possibly some other disc), puts it back into your packaging
and puts it in the post.
The drawbacks to this are that (a) it's a waste of money sending blank
CDs around and (b) many of us have strong preferences as to brands of
blanks; obviously, if you and your branch can sort out a trade or other
alternative, that's great.
My own preferences, in order of preference, are as follows:
1) contact me and trade me something interesting I don't have.
2) a blank CD, packaging and postage cost me about ?1.10, including the
41p stamp; send me two 41p and one first class stamps, and I'll use
my materials.
3) (distant third) Conventional B&P.
Enough background. Individual branches should discuss their own
preferences with their leaves, but you (the branch) must be prepared to
accept B&P.
To be in on the first, organised, phase of the tree, which should get it
to you by Christmas, you should sign up at the following address:
with:
(a) whether you are willing to be a branch, and if so roughly how many
copies you're willing to make (I will not ask anyone to do more
than 8, and hopefully fewer if we have enough branches).
(b) an email address in a form that you are willing to have published,
anti-spam munged if you like. I'll post the tree on my web page,
much like, say, this:
http://www.geocities.com/treeme12/sturbulance/sturbulancetree.htm
so please include any spam munging that will make you comfortable.
You will probably not get a reply until a good chunk of the tree is
built.
If there are a cluster of you who see each other regularly, and so want
to trade with each other without postage, I don't need to know about it;
just factor that in to how many if any you're willing to burn within the
tree. I'll build the tree essentially randomly, on a first come first
served basis. At that point, traders should contact their branches and
make arrangements.
Please signup asap, so we can get this done in time for the Christmas
post. Thanks!

I may have got my wires crossed on this but were we going to flog copies to
mates/friends/family/work colleages etc.... for charity? Or was that going
to be via an mp3 website? Sorry, can't remember, may have dreamed it all.
Andrew(lefty)
this is undergoing investigation at the moment.
I maintain and admin UKMG's page at mp3.com ( www.mp3.com/ukmg ) and am
uploading all the tracks there. however, a couple of them will likely be
disallowed due to copyright issues. therefore, the CD that will go on sale
at mp3.com will likely *not* contain all 18 submitted tracks, but *will* be
purchasable online, and proceeds *will* go to cheridee.
cheers,

The proposal was for two versions, one for internal consumption only
which contains everything including copyright tunes, and the one for
sale on, hopefully, mp3.com who's proceeds will go to charity and which
will have to have the copyright tunes removed. Clive's dealing with the
mp3.com issue and has stuffed the entire album at them and is waiting to
see what they object to.
Flogging the internal version to family and friends is probably OK if
someone is prepared to collect the dosh for charity and no one
'dips the pot' but that's a danger as well as being wrongly accused of
it if you get collections a bit muddled, so I reckon it's best we use
Rick's method for internal distribution and Clive's mp3.com does the
charity stuff. That way, no one needs to handle money.
Mind, we could always auction the master internal copy on e-bay
for charity!
My composition is of traditional music and thus has no copyright
limitations. It's public domain. Just wanted to state that for the
record (pun intended).
Which tracks are you concerned about not being able to included on
MP3?
I too was hoping to just get the CD from MP3.com. It would be a
little impractical to ship CD's across the Atlantic for a distribution
tree. Sorry.

"Fairytale of new york" and the band-aid cover are the two obvious
problems.

Well, I'm sure something could be arranged - ie, you're meeting Adrian in
Bristol just after christmas, right?
I would point out that mp3.com have to ship CDs across the atlantic to us
(unless they've changed their model since I last bought one from them).

If you don't mind waiting (and given the Xmas post, this might be the
better option) I could bring you a copy on the 28th. Or Rick could, if
he's coming...
