I'm a guitar newbie so please don't bite. I've been playing for about 8
months (mostly self taught) and I'm not really up on the tecnical aspects of
things.

Can anyone advise me on the best way to reproduce Avril Lavigne's scratchy,
slightly tinny guitar sound on my own instrument?

I (and my punk rock band) would appreciate any tips you could give me.

That really depends what your own instrument is. IIRC Avril uses a
Telecaster which tends to give that type of sound anyway. Certainly it
will be easier to get the sound from single pickups rather than
humbuckers, and I'd suggest the bridge pickup rather than the neck. No
idea what amps she uses, but the sound is fairly clean even though some
distortion is used, so more Fender than Marshall. Keep the treble high,
back off on the bass and middle. Medium gain at a guess.
At the end of the day you can only experiment until your own equipment
gives you the sound you want.

I hate to sound cynical, but is that actually Avril that can be heard
on recordings and/or in concert?

To judge by past experience, I'd hazard a guess that it isn't and that
the guitar she "plays" is really a prop.

Not a criticism, just an educated guess.

FWIW, she seems to favour Telecasters in the videos of her that I've
seen.

"Scratchy, slightly tinny" would infer a fairly clean sound and a
Fenderish amp, or maybe even through something like a Pod and thence
to the desk.

Could even be an Encore through a cheap tranny amp ;)

My guitar is a fender strat copy - it's had about 5 different owners before
me and to say it's a bit tatty now would be the understaement of the year.
Still, it was free.

My amp is a piece of shit - don't even know what make it is, it's that badly
beaten up. No gizmos.

Seen her live four times now, she definitely plays. One time was a solo
acoustic performance - she's a pretty shit hot guitarist. When playing large
gigs, she usually plays rythm guitar on the fast songs and concentrates on
singing.

Never heard her do a massive technical solo, though Avril is well known as
being strongly anti-soloing (the Avril band fine each other every time
anyone solos in rehearsals).

Okay mate, thanks for that. When I get together enough money for a better
amp, I'll play around and see what I can come up with.

Aaargh! That brings back awful memories from about 10 years ago, prior to
serious GAS taking hold .
How fondly (not) I remember my Encore strat copy and Ibanez - yes, I did say
Ibanez - 15W tranny amp.
Nearly put me off playing for good.

There would be a lot of skint UKMGers if we all adopted that rule :-)

There are some good bargains to be had 2nd hand. I picked up a 300w
mixer PA for my daughter for £50 - OK not a guitar amp but she's a
vocalist. But add a used V-amp for another £50 and you have a very
versatile unit... and a PA as well!

Yeah, punk's about making do with what you have and getting on with it. If
the feeling's there, who cares if you have crap equipment and sound crap?

Best Avril quote ever was something about having some CDs in her collection
where she could almost see the guitarist's semen dripping out of the
speakers.

People who aren't deaf?

Seriously, have a listen to Never Mind the Bollocks & London Calling -
there's some great guitar playing on both those albums. Its not all about
learing A,D & E and playing as fast as you can.
