Mountain, "Nantucket Sleigh Ride": specifically it's the instrumental bit
after both choruses.

Surely "Nantucket Sleighride" was the theme to Weekend World, not World in
Action.
Sorry, got my pedantic head on tonight.

Eee lad, are you sure?
That were the theme tune to LWT's "Weekend World", weren't it?
The classic theme tune to Granada <spit> Television's "World In Action" was
an unavailable-to-the-public recording (read: "library item") composed by
Laurie Johnson (who also wrote the music used for "The Avengers" [the
post-Honor Blackman episodes] and "This Is Your Life", as well as "Animal
Magic").

That was "Weekend World", I think. "World in Action" was all Hammond
organ.
Aah, thank you, Google. The tune is called "Jam for World in Action",
and it's by Jonathan Weston. You can listen to it here...

Ooh! That's different from the one that I found. Maybe my source was
wrong...
You sure?...Wasn't that the name of the theme to the old grey whistle
test?......

Probably not. I was referring to the original theme used from the
programme's inception in c.1963 (still heard again every seven years when
Granada - or perhaps now the BBC - do the update on "Seven Up").
PS: This "..."Jam for World in Action" by Jonathan Weston" was very
obviously picked by the same process as Weekend World's "Nantucket
[whatever]". I can't remember which one was adopted first, but the original
(and very superior) Laurie Johnson theme for WIA was used for *many* years.

Aaahh... long before my time ;-)
Is the Laurie Johnson piece online (mp3 or whatever) anywhere? A cursory
search only turned up the Jonathan Weston tune and a number of
irrelevant US sites.

Thanks Jim! Unfortunately, Hotmail won't let me have the file for some
(probably arbitrary) reason - would you mind sending it to my "proper"
email address? (Anything @ the domain name in the sig below)

No sooner read than done...

By Area Code 615 - a bunch of Nashville session aces - harp played by
Charlie McCoy - who later evolved into Barefoot Jerry who were one
hell of a great band.
