Whilst re-stringing No.1 last night, I noticed that most of my frets have
got worn to the point of having grooves in them...

I'd love to have a go at re-fretting it myself, but I haven't got the right
tools or the workspace (plus I'm scared of buggering it up!).

Anyone know of a decent luthier/repairman in the Essex/SE England area? Any
idea of prices?
I *could* just go into my local music shop & get their tech to do it, but I
haven't seen/played any of his work - I'd much rather go by personal
recommendation...

Cheers,

Ross.

You could try the luthier at Ritzy guitars in Putney. His fretwork is just
beautiful - but EXPENSIVE - he quoted me £195.00 to refret my (maple) strat.
That's everything - full fret job and set up etc..... I checked out some of
the guitars he was working on and the quality was just great. The guy
specialises in fret work - but as mentioned before - he's not cheap.

Alternatively, Rokas in Denmark Street quoted me £100 for the same job - but
having had them do me a nut one time, I'm not best impressed with their work
(I redid it myself and got a much better result).

Basically - I called several stores, visited a few and have been quoted
anywhere from £100 to £200 for a complete refret. I still haven't had it
done yet though......

It'll cost about 100 - 150 quid.
I did my Telecaster myself. Came out OK, wasn't too hard and didn't
requiremany tools, just a bit of patience, couple of files, an oilstone,
junior hacksaw
a some superglue and a pair of small wirecutters. There's a web page
somewhere which gives instructions for DIY re-frets. I used it and it turned
out to be pretty good. The hard bit is getting the old frets out without
splintering the fingerboard.

Ross,
If there are grooves, why not try a fret dressing first instead of a re-fret?
If the fretwire isn't too worn, you could try that yourself before attempting a
total re-fret.

To be perfectly honest, I feel that the frets are a little on the small side
(low & narrow)... I've played several guitars with bigger profile (read
jumbo) frets & they better suit my style of playing - maybe now's the time
to make the change...!

If you fancy another trip up to MK, Ross, I can give you the name of a
very good tech - he builds guitars as well.

E-mail me for further details if you're interested.

Steve.

Try Martyn Booth just outside Sudbury, Suffolk he's on 01787-370192.
Ex. Gibson and Yamaha, designer of the Yamaha MSG.

Have all my guitars done by him.

General set-up and fret dress will knock you back about £75

Very good tech.

Phil

Luckily "vintage" doesn't enter the equation... it's an EKO CX-7 (photo at
http://www.rossweb.currantbun.com/pics.htm)

It's a 24 fret, glued in neck, rosewood fingerboard; but there's hardly any
overhang on the body...

I checked out the cost of the tools & materials (Stew-Mac) for doing my own
re-fret - it came to about UKP130. I know I can get it done locally for
UKP95 - plus I can blame the repairman if abything goes wrong!!
