Anyone got any recommendations about Gaordon Smith guitars? I'm looking for
a second guitar and saw a couple of these in a local shop at what I thought
was a reasonable price and they looked very nice but have yet to demo them.

From the few comments I've heard, I get the impression that they are very
good but can find little information or reviews to back this up.

Are they a good choice?

Reasonably priced, hand made in Britain - what better reason do you need to
buy one ;->

Erm, sound quality, playability, reliability etc?

Even though they are hand made and reasonably priced, if they don't sound
good, play well or are prone to bits falling off, they wouldn't be worth
considering.

To be honest I haven't heard any negative things at all but I just wanted to
know if they are a good buy or would I be better spending the same money on
something else?

I think I'm going to have to go and try a couple.

Hello Howard.

Personally I've been seeking advice from readers of this newsgroup for
some 4 months now. After a 20 year break I've decided to take up playing
guitar again.

After trying out a Fender Strat, Gibson LP Studio and various Gordon-
Smith's, I recently ordered (and awaiting delivery of) a Gordon-Smith
GS2 Deluxe as reviewed recently in Guitarist magazine (Feb 99 issue I
think).

Why did I go for the G-S?

1. It represented good value for money.

2. I personally (note the word personally) preferred the versatility and
range of sounds that the instrument was able to produce.

3. A high opinion held by Guitarist after their review (invaluable
information for novices like myself).

4. Jason at Machinehead Music convinced me that the build quality has
never been questioned.

5. It's made in England.

6. The build quality of the lower-end-of-range Fenders and Gibsons was
variable.

7. The G-S sounds great (have I already said that?) and is very
playable.

8. The wife would have gone berserk if I bought a PRS.

... the list is endless.

The only 'downer' is that the second-hand re-sale may not be as good as
that expected of a Fender, Gibson or indeed any other 'top-name'.

At the end of the day, take the advice I was given on this NG. Try lots
of instruments, and if you like the G-S buy it.

I hope to get mine within the next couple of weeks. I can't wait!

Hope the above helps.

Cheers.

I think Guitarist reviewed GS' latest offering a month or so ago - rated it
pretty highly, too, if memory serves...

I recently sold a GS-1 (amongst other guitars), I was generally pleased with
it, it was possible to get a nice setup on it and played well.

However, the pick-ups don't really do the guitar justice (in my opinion) -
but that's easily fixed. One thing I do object to is when it is touted
(particularly by some shops) as an alternative to a Les Paul (which I have
now bought), constructionally they are more similar to SGs but don't even
sound like them. I think what I am getting at is that buy one because you
like the sound/guitar for itself and not as a Les Paul/SG copy/alternative
etc.

Although they are not Les Pauls, much less Gibsons, I strongly recommend you
also try out some Gordon -Smith guitars. These are hand-made in Britain out
of solid mahogany with hand-wound pickups. The body is a bit thinner than
the Gibsons at 35mm but for 20 pounds extra you can have the 45mm thick
body. They haven't all the fancy extras of the Les Paul Customs and Specials
and are more like the Studio model. The GS2 model has 2 coil-tappable
humbuckers and can be had for about 370 pounds new. The coil-taps provide
for a wide range of different sounds. Many say these guitars are of the
quality, and playability of Gibsons but are priced in the Epiphone price
range.

People I know with Les Pauls have tried mine out and very much liked it -
until I told them the cost - they're jaws nearly hit the floor!

I have had a Gordon Smith for about 15 years

A hollow body -- f hole --- sort of Gibson SG shape

It is the prettiest and most versatile guitar I have.

I've forgotten the model but .....

I did play a 25 year anniversary model recently -- very nice --- I could
pick and slide on it.

Better than a cheesy japanese american copy eh ????

Emphatically- Yes!!

I've had mine for, oh nearly ten years now- veteran of countless gigs,
two refrets, three changes of style and an ex-gf trying to smash it with
a hammer. Cracking piece of kit. Granted mine has Seymour JB's in it,
but even so for any gig, no matter what style, it comes.
